Witness: ‘No way’ Novak didn’t know he hit someone; victim was ’splayed across the front’ of his car.»

Politico reports that conservative pundit Robert Novak “was cited by police after he hit a pedestrian with his black Corvette in downtown Washington, D.C., Wednesday morning.” Novak initially “drove away from the scene,” but turned around when “a bicyclist stopped him and said, ‘You hit someone.’” Novak claimed: “I didn’t know I hit anybody.” But Washington DC’s local ABC affiliate interviewed the bicyclist who saw the incident. WJLA’s Susan Kennedy reported live from the scene:

I just spoke with the bicyclist about three minutes ago. He tells me that the pedestrian was actually splayed across the front of Novak’s convertible, and that there would be absolutely no way Novak would have not known that he had hit someone.

Politico notes that in a 2001 interview with the Washington Post, Novak said, “I really hate jaywalkers. I despise them. Since I don’t run the country, all I can do is yell at ‘em. The other option is to run ‘em over, but as a compassionate conservative, I would never do that.”

3. Here is what the bicyclist saw and said:
The bicyclist was David Bono, a partner at Harkins Cunningham, who was on his usual bike commute to work at 1700 K St. NW when he saw the accident happen.

As he traveled east on K. Street, crossing 18th, Bono said a "black Corvette convertible with top closed plowed into the guy. The guy is sort of splayed onto the windshield.”

Bono said the pedestrian, who was crossing the street on a "Walk" signal and was in the crosswalk, rolled off the windshield and then Novak made a right into the service lane of K Street. “The car is speeding away. What’s going through my mind is, you just can’t hit a pedestrian and drive away,” Bono said.

He chased Novak half a block down K St., finally caught up with him and then put his bike in front of the car to block him and called 911. Traffic immediately backed up, horns blared, and commuters finally went into reverse to allow Novak to pull over.

Bono said that throughout, Novak "keeps trying to get away. He keeps trying to go.” He said he vaguely recognized the longtime political reporter and columnist as a Washington celebrity but could not precisely place him.

Finally, Novak put his head out the window of his car and motioned him over. Bono said he told him that you can't hit a pedestrian and just drive away. He said Novak responded: “I didn’t see him there.”

A concierge at 1700 K Street said that she saw a bicyclist yelling and walked outside to see what the commotion was about.

"This guy hit somebody and he won't stop so I'm going to stay here until the police come," Aleta Petty quoted Bono as saying, as he stood in K Street, blocking traffic.

8. On the last part, they were on the service road
So while he may have blocked the service road, he was not blocking K Street. Good on Bono for not letting him hit and run and get away with it.

13. obviously, this "witness" is a terrorist plant...
riding a *bicycle* to work. Bah! Unamerican! This "witness" should be locked up and waterboarded until he recants and stops telling these lies about my dear friend, Bob Novak.

17. Same goes for McCain's mother.
It's too bad Novak didn't have a hooker in his car at the time of the crash.

Edited on Wed Jul-23-08 01:42 PM by TahitiNut
I get the impression that'd make a BIG difference in Novakula's behavior. In Novakula's 'ideal' world, whites ride and blacks walk - or are mere debris.

18. He should lose his license, at the very least. He's obviously unfit to drive
even if his so called excuse were true. I realize that we have two Americas, but even if he gets away with his heinous crime, he shouldn't be able to drive in our streets anymore

20. I want every black who's been a victim of racial profiling...
Edited on Wed Jul-23-08 11:18 PM by MonteLukast
... hell, everybody, period, who's been a victim of any kind of profiling, to grab onto this and not let it go. Pressure the DC police till it's coming out of their ears. How is a pundit-- a freaking pundit-- who's not even the richest of the rich to begin with, able to have that much sway over policemen? Jeez, he's not a lawmaker, or even a lobbyist!

One conversation in the back seat of the police car and the cops back off. You know damn well that it would be jail time and license revocation hell for the average person.

What, did Novak threaten to get them fired if they prosecuted? Is it their fear of Republican retribution? Once again, how is a mere PUNDIT capable of this?

Edited on Thu Jul-24-08 02:30 AM by TahitiNut
... and she was thrilled to hear Novakula got his ass in a jam but hadn't heard anything about it even though it happened while she was working within earshot. Strange that the DC grapevine didn't spread the news like wildfire, huh? (Especially in the lobbying firms.) (She's passingly familiar with Bono's law firm ... somewhat small compared to K Street firms.)
