Disabled at the pump

It is something we all take for granted. It is the act of pulling into a gas station and filling up our cars with gas. But, for people with disabilities, that task can be tough if not impossible.

The disabled are supposed to receive help under the law. They pull up to the pump. They honk their horns, even press a button for help. But, as an NBC Action News hidden camera investigation discovered, help at some gas stations is slow to come, if it comes at all.

But when Clayton Porter tried to get help pumping gas, help was hard to find. Our hidden cameras watched as he pulled into the Conoco station near 435 and Eastwood Traffic Way. We watched as he honked and he waited. He honked and he continued to wait. No one comes out to assist him. Our cameras capture one employee looking towards Clayton’s car after hearing his car horn, but still, she kept walking.

A few feet away, we find another station employee sitting outside taking a break. The employee offered no assistance. Inside our cameras show 3 employees working behind the counter. Still no help is given. In all, we counted at least gas station employees inside and out at the time of Clayton’s visit.

Gas stations were full service and would even clean your windshield and check your oil.Another thing to thank the repukes for.

2. They still pump your gas for you in NJ

It's a state law.

Same as self checkout at Wally-World.If people are good enough to spend thier money with you,you should at least provide service.

3. i never realized that gas stations were required to pump gas for the disabled...

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires gas station employees to pump gas for the disabled if they ask. The Act goes on to say if there is only one employee working, the ADA does not "require", but "encourages" station employees to help.

i have a disability and a parking placard to go along with it, but i don't remember them saying anything about having a golden ticket to full-service in the literature that came along with it. that's going to come in handy this winter, that's for sure...:woohoo:

8. here's one that doesn't make sense-

where we used to live, in evanston just north of chicago, the downtown area had metered parking spaces lining the streets, and the last two spaces on each block were handicapped only...so far so good...BUT- the part that doesn't make sense- the handicapped only spaces were also the only ones that didn't have parking meters.
as i said- i have a placard for parking in handicap spaces- but i think that it's totally unfair that we don't have to feed a meter, when everyone else does.
that's all.
