400,000+ gal tar-like fuel oil spill in Mississippi River (New Orleans). Damn it all
Sounds like a real mess, smelly, nasty, worries about drinking water, etc.

http://www.nola.com/news/index.ssf/2008/07/ap_collision_closes_mississipp.html
A 29-mile stretch of the Mississippi River could remain closed for days after a tanker collided with a barge being pulled by a tugboat, slicing the barge in half and causing hundreds of thousands of gallons of heavy fuel oil to spill into the waterway. No injuries were reported in the collision, but the heavy smell of fuel has continued to plague the French Quarter and other parts of the city. The Coast Guard has closed the river between mile markers 70 and 99, from the vicinity of the Harvey Locks to near the mouth of the river.

In the meantime, state environmental officials are coordinating a massive effort to consolidate the oil and prevent it from drifting farther south, where there are more levee breaks that would allow it to leach into the wetlands. As of late morning, the state oil spill coordinator said the fuel had drifted a mile south of Belle Chasse.

State Department of Environmental Quality officials warned the unrefined, tar-like # 6 fuel oil is so thick that it could sink, complicating the cleanup efforts. Therefore, the fuel oil won't simply evaporate off the surface, which means workers will try to remove it before it starts to sink. "This is not our first rodeo; we've seen spills before," said Roland Guidry of the Oil Spill Coordinator's Office.

Residents in Algiers, Gretna, St. Bernard Parish and Plaquemines Parish are also being asked to conserve water, as water intakes for those communities are closed to prevent contamination of the drinking water supply. Water flowing through the tap is from reserve supplies, which could run out in many areas by afternoon or early evening, officials said....(more@link)

The Coast Guard closed 29 miles (47 kilometers) of the Mississippi River at New Orleans after a 600-foot (183-meter) tanker and a barge loaded with fuel oil collided, breaking the barge in half. Nobody was injured, but more than 419,000 gallons (1.5 million liters) of heavy fuel oil spilled from the barge, said Lt. Cdr. Cheri Ben-Iesau, a Coast Guard spokeswoman

The double-hulled tanker Tintomara was loaded with about 4.2 million gallons (15.9 million liters) of biodiesel bound for Rotterdam, the Netherlands, and nearly 1.3 million gallons (4.9 million liters) of styrene bound for Hamburg, Germany, but was not leaking, said Michael Wilson, president of ship management company Laurin Maritime (America) Inc. in Houston.

The company is a subsidiary of Goteborg, Sweden-based Laurin Maritime AB. The Liberian-flagged tanker is owned by Whitefin Shipping Co. Ltd. of Gibraltar. The tanker had only minor damage, the management company said....(bit more)

...
The campaign has been discussing having McCain visit an offshore oil rig during his visit, but it's not certain whether that is still on the agenda. A campaign aide would only say that McCain is planning to do "an event in the region" Thursday.

Storms forecast for the area might cause the rig visit to be canceled and another event substituted.

It's also possible that the campaign would not want to have McCain highlighting his support for increased drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf at a time officials are dealing with a spill of an estimated 9,000 barrels of diesel fuel into the Mississippi River....

That's about $2 million lost in just fuel oil alone.

11. Actually, foreign ship captains cannot steer their ships up the Mississippi
They are required by law to allow United States river captains to navigate the river, so it was an American steering the ship, not the Liberian captain.

15. Liberian flagged ships are different.
Edited on Wed Jul-23-08 02:11 PM by uppityperson
They don't nec have a Liberian captain. Ships that are unable to get licensed in other countries (like USA) due to being unsafe, unsound, etc, can and do get licensed in Liberia since the main thing needed to do so it just pay the fee. So, being "Liberian flagged" raises a red flag for me since it means the ship itself is suspect.

They can and do be piloted by citizens of other countries, like USA, as far as I know, unless things have changed in the last few yrs.

edited to add, do a google search and you'll see lots of incidents involving Liberian flagged ships.

"National flag flown by a ship that has registered in that country in order to avoid legal or tax commitments (also known as offshore registry). Flags of convenience are common in the merchant fleets of Liberia and Panama; ships registered in these countries avoid legislation governing, for example, employment of sailors and minimum rates of pay.

In 1995 75 million gross tonnes of shipping was registered in Panama, making it the world's largest merchant fleet. Ships registered under flags of convenience accounted in 1993 for 34% of the world's fleet but 60% of all maritime accidents."

Liberians or Panamanians serving on them. It's just a scam to avoid the pesky safety and environmental regulations. It's a law of the sea that should probably be reformed at least for hazardous cargos.

17. Wow, I JUST left NOLA yesterday afternoon.
The Big Muddy was just muddy, not toxic yesterday morning when I stood on the levee at Jackson Square........

I feel bad for the bicycle commuters who take the ferry from Old Algiers over to work in the city. There are a bunch of them, and I bet a lot don't have cars for going the long way around.......

After Touting Drilling’s ‘Safety,’ McCain Cancels Gulf Of Mexico Oil Rig Event Because Of The ‘Weather’
http://thinkprogress.org/2008/07/23/mccain-cancels-on-rigs/
In announcing his newfound support for offshore drilling, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) consistently touts the safety of offshore oil exploration. “t’s safe enough these days that not even Hurricanes Katrina and Rita could cause significant spillage,” he said recently. To make his case, McCain was scheduled to helicopter tomorrow to an oil rig in the Gulf Coast. But it seems even McCain is fearful of being caught on an offshore oil rig during rough weather. Jonathan Martin reports:

Just over an hour after finalizing plans to visit an oil rig tomorrow, the McCain campaign has cancelled the visit.“The meeting with Governor Jindal has been postponed and we are cancelling the trip to the rig due to weather,” said spokesman Michael Goldfarb. <…>

The campaign declined to comment any further about the quick decision to spike the trip other than to cite the weather. ...

As McCain makes his push for increased oil production, Louisiana officials are also dealing with a barge collision that caused a spill of an estimated 9,000 barrels of fuel into the Mississippi River, resulting in a 12-mile long oil slick. “Television stations reported the stench of diesel fuel wafting across the French Quarter.”
