1. Excerpt...

"...Waters advocates eating locally produced foods that are in season, because she believes that the international shipment of mass-produced food is both harmful to the environment and produces an inferior product for the consumer."

This cannot be said enough.

Thank you for the post.

2. Growing and eating local is what will save us.
Healthwise, economically, environmentally, build out communities, and on and on.

6. We have a new restaurant in town that is all about local and organic.
The Cottage Eatery in Tiburon is doing it, and the fare is phenomenal.

They are about fifty yards down the sidewalk from me.

The best roast suckling pig I have ever had.

5. I can't afford $5-8 for a basket of strawberries.
No question they taste like heaven, though.

8. Depends on locale, I guess.
Local blueberries are now in season and dirt cheap now.
A month ago I saw them in the grocery (from California, 2000 miles away) for approx $1 per ounce.

Now about $3 a quart for local stuff.

11. Depends on how that $5-8 is divided up...
...if the bulk of that $5-8 goes to transportation costs, then somethings wrong.

Especially when those transportation costs are inflated to line the pocket of speculators.

3. She has caused me a lot of serious problems.
Because once you've had a few dinners at Panisse, there aren't many other places you want to go to.

And it takes forever to get into The French Laundry.

7. No, the food is so damned good, I want to eat there all the time.
But I don't enjoy driving in Berkeley.

Too much traffic.

10. Spread in San Diego uses locally grown foods
And it's amazing. I can't even reproduce the food that I had there when I was still in Cali, because I just can't find ingredients that fresh.

Their menu changes nightly, based on what they found at the farmer's market that day, and they grow their own herbs in their backyards and alleyways. I think it was in Hillcrest, but it could have been North Park. The basil lime sangria was to die for.

I go to the farmer's market here in Colorado, and they do have nice things, but they're not cheap. They also don't always have a good selection of different foods. It seems like everyone has only lettuce, or only beets, or only squash. There's only so many times in a week that I can eat bok choy. I love biking to the market and coming home with a basket full of goodies, though.
