Radio Lady: Did you hear Harrison, the talk show host who took over for Randi Rhodes on...
Edited on Fri Jul-25-08 06:25 AM by Radio_Lady
Thursday, July 24? What a breath of fresh air and conversation! Just a deft handling of several sensitive topics -- I had never heard him before. I only caught a couple of segments from that show. He called himself Harrison in Hollywood. Is he on KTLK?

There are so many new and unique voices on the radio and on the Internet. It pleases me so much to hear them.

This is the only archived thread I found about him by doing a search.

1. Posting this on Friday, July 25. I know there is supposed to be an action taken today.
This is regarding impeachment.

If anyone can fill in the details, those of us here on the Left Coast would love to hear about it. A lot of us are here with moral support.

My time on the Internet will be limited today -- personal obligations fill the weekend and I have to get ready.

Make it a good day!

2. Harrison Is Quite A Fellow
I worked with him about a decade ago...he was producing a short feature at the time called "Future Shock". He's a very funny and highly intelliegent guy who has had a tough battle within radio...especially at that time...due to his orientation.

Harrison now is in LA...bases out of KTLK in LA. I thought he was only on over the weekends, but I would imagine and LA area DUer can give more specifics. He isn't carried on the part-time Progressive Talker here...but then mostly everyone isn't these days.

Cheers...

:hi:

3. Hi KharmaTrain... Nice to hear from you again! How are you this summer?

OT: Do you know anything about the website www.blogtalkradio.com ?

Looks like an interesting site.

I'm now working with my own journal here (mostly film, theater, and book reviewing).

Maybe you know already but Oregon Public Broadcasting pulled the plug on its secondary audio programming channel, months before the shift to digital broadcasting.

Here's the whole sordid story in my journal... if you're interested. Here's the link. Read it and weep:

http://journals.democraticunderground.com/Radio_Lady/237

I'm now volunteering for KGW.com, the website of the NBC-TV affiliate Channel 8 here in Portland. I'm doing film reviews and perhaps other features. I was asked to do it by one of the we site producers. Here's my latest movie review for "The Dark Knight" (Now playing nationwide and breaking all kinds of records:

http://www.kgw.com/lifestyle/stories/kgw_071808_lifestyle_batman_review.6aa5ebee.html

All this is unpaid, I'm afraid. Well, we get free movie and theater tickets.

After you contacted me, my husband set up a recording studio in our den and it seems to be working well.

Right now, I'm a Radio Lady without a radio voice. But my fingers do the talking!

Make it a good day!

4. I've Been Reading...What A Joke
Hiya RL...

I'm sorry about what happened at OPB...but it's more a symptom of what a bust-out HD radio has been. A lot of money was invested in the equipment and few people even have the radios to listen. You know how tight times are and how bad the radio world has become...may just be a good thing to be as far away from the pending disaster and be ready to step in afterwards and pick up the pieces.

Now that you have the studio...this sounds like a great time to do your own thing...i think a lot of us here in DUland would surely enjoy hearing your reviews...and who knows, might be something you can get on a few stations as well and build your own "empire"...a lot more fun and satisfying than trying to make sense in a corporate world that is stuck in its own self-destructive politics. It's pretty easy to do a podcast and with your ability to promote, you will reach a lot more interested ears.

Tonight my son and I are gonna see Bill Mahrer...I can't wait to hear his take on all the events this week...I've been jonsing not having him to watch on Friday nights...so tonight I'll have my Mahrer fix at the Chicago Theater.

Again...don't feel bad about the HD-2 thing going bust...IMHO they did you a favor as this "medium" appears to be heading nowhere and if they didn't pull the plug now, imagine how frustrating it would have been if you had developed something and then had the rug pulled in the middle. Honestly, I think you should look into podcasting and matching it with your writings and share it with a far bigger "universe".

Me...I'm just living in my basement and still doing my thing...Internet radio, IMHO, will be the ultimate winner of the digital radio wars...it's already being streamed into cars and cellphones in Europe and Asia and hopefully will start happening here within the next year (but then I've been told this for the past three years)...empowering far more voices, programming and variety.

Cheers...

6. I used to love Harrison's KTLA show
and then management rather unceremoniously took him from us and gave us....somebody like Colmes or something (before they also axed Colmes' show). I have loved listening to Harrison this week. He's smart, funny, and he has an amazing vocabulary!

He did a really great piece on NPR that he played on his KTLA show. He was investigating his family history and, in researching it (I'm going to get this wrong somehow), he ended up discovering that some of his relatives in MD were slave owners. But he also noticed that many African Americans in that area shared the same last name and, in his digging, realized that their ancestors had been slaves in his ancestor's plantation/home; part of the documentary was Harrison visiting the descendants of the enslaved to apologize to them for what his great- great- great grandfather had done.

7. I happened to hear him express regrets to the women he has dated in his life.
Edited on Fri Jul-25-08 12:24 PM by Radio_Lady
He called it "human theft." He says they were fantastic women -- beautiful and wonderful -- and he took them away from the pursuit of men with whom they could find a real relationship -- marry and have children. What a profound admission on a live nationwide radio show! I've never heard anything like that before.

Years ago, I interviewed a local author who was writing a book called "DAMN! Reflections on Life's Biggest Regrets." He collected his stories via the Internet and turned out a book by the same name. My regrets were included anonymously, mostly around the subject of merged/blended stepfamily issues. The book was fascinating.

Barry Cadish said his book "includes 290 people from around the world who write about all the things they'd do differently with a second chance. Their stories are candid, heartfelt and thought-provoking."

He sounded pompous, egotistical and self-righteous to me.

I'll pass.

11. Sure. No worries. Thanks for posting, Breeze54.
Perhaps it was something in his message asking for forgiveness that sparked with me.

Make it a great day!

OPEN MESSAGE TO: Cary Harrison, do you want another set of parents? We wanted a blonde headed boy as brainy and sweet as you seem to be, but didn't get him. You and your significant other, if you have one, have an open invitation to contact us for general hugs and stuff. I wish you the very best with your life and hope to hear you another time or two.

Make it a great day!

Radio Lady Ellen Kimball and Audio Al

PS. We met in 1972, then married in 1973 and are still together after 37 years!
You might have been our beautiful "ours" baby (!), but we ended up with 3 "Yours" and 2 "Mine"! But five kids was enough for us.
