It there was any doubt who NPR supported, it was erased this morning...
Yesterday I read on DU many threads about Obama's historic speech. This morning I was sure NPR would report on this speech and include clips. When NPR began it's broadcast day (5:00 am) I listened with anticipation. No luck--the very first story on the very first news report of the day was McCain's visit to a German delicatessen! Included was a clip of McCain whining about taxes and government spending.

"OK," I thought, "Maybe NPR will lead off with the Obama speech on it's 'Morning Edition' following its 'news' <sic> broadcast" Still no luck--the very first story on ME was Condi Rice's comments about Pakistan...

No Obama. :(

NPR = "News Prostitutes for Republicans"

1. I've heard several mentions of Obama's speech on NPR
Including yesterday when I drove home from work, and this morning as I drove in to work. They didn't play clips, but they certainly talked about it.

and they spent a great deal of time last night talking about his trip.

NPR is about as fair as it gets out there.

5. I don't know...
Each morning this week, NPR has included a clip of McCain on the campaign trail. Not so with Obama.

See my post below...

4. It's unfortunate they didn't view it important enough to start their news day with reports of it.
They didn't play clips, but they certainly talked about it.--This is a common stunt with CorpMedia: "talk about" something a Dem does but don't include actual clips of speeches or interviews.

During 2000 it wasn't uncommon for NPR to "report" on Bush's campaigning constantly by treating it as a "news story" and including clips. Even a moron can sound "presidential" when packaged in this fashion:

NPR: Today, Governor Bush spoke to a group of farmers about reforming federal farm subsidies program" <run clip> "And I...want to...put...FOOD ON YOUR FAMILY!!!" (huge response of cheers and applause by carefully selected audience of GOP farmers).

And in other news today a spokesperson for the Gore Campaign said if elected the Vice President would look into the farm subsidies program...

6. I listened to NPR yesterday after BO's speech
They interviewed 2 people in the audience who heard the speech.
One was an American woman who has lived in Germany for 22 years. Her comments were pretty much negative. She said the part of Obama's speech where he said he loved America drew a low rumble from the crowd.
Oddly she said Germans don't like to here anyone say they love their country.
The other person a German said he did'nt think BO would make much of a change in the US.
You would think they could have one positive comment.

9. Heard the same but different
The lady whose remarks prompted "Oddly she said Germans don't like to here anyone say they love their country."
I understood to mean the German YOUTH don't like that kind of old fogey talk because it reeks of right wing nationalism, just like I get uncomfortable when Legionnaires rail on about patriotism. One step removed from the love it or leave it BS.

So she was an American demonstrating knowledge of the culture.

NPR remains open minded on the East coast. Do they get a special edit in KS?

7. Dunno which NPR you listened to but I woke up to clips...
this morning, and a lot of positive coverage of the trip.

And, uh, yeah, as much as I can't stand Condi, what she says is US policy, for good or ill, and does deserve a mention. Might even deserve more of a mention than a campaign speech, even an historic campaign speech.

(What do you people EXPECT from the news?)

8. Really? It was the first (and biggest) story I heard
this morning with several mentions of the size of crowd (vs. McCain's stop in the empty grocery store...) and several clips from the speech...

11. I think state public radio stations can use or ignore national segments as they choose
Maybe Kansas public radio simply didn't use the segment with the clips of the Obama speech. On Iowa public radio we heard a long clip, but I didn't notice where it was in the sequencing of the stories covered.

15. Make sure to call during the next Beg-a-Thon
and tell them why you'll NOT be donating. The volunteers manning the phones in the bull-pen talk to each other. Demoralizing them is powerful tool, be polite and informative then say goodbye and hang up.
