My asshat congressman: Matheson says he'll skip Democratic convention

He's been great on the issue of nuclear waste, but not much else.

July 25th, 2008 @ 9:09am

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Utah's top-ranking Democrat will skip the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Denver next month.

Rep. Jim Matheson tells The Salt Lake Tribune that the event will mostly be pageantry because Barack Obama has effectively secured the party's nomination for president.

Instead, Matheson says he plans to spend the week working on his re-election campaign and spending time with his family.

He also missed the Democratic conventions in 2000 and 2004.

Matheson's decision not to attend the convention in Denver irritates other state delegates who say the congressman should be there.

1. he is right, tho.
conventions these days are a complete waste of time. Why not simply have a coronation?

People who would know tell me that the biggest difference between the D and R conventions is that the use of prostitutes is much higher among the republicans, and because of their lack of stamina, they manage to serve many more GOPer per hooker per day. All in all, the GOP convention is like manna from heaven brought to you by the family values party.

2. He's right, and he's also the only major elected Democrat in the state of Utah.
The gov., lt. gov, both senators and both other congressmen are all Republicans. All Matheson needs is for some photographer to snap a picture of him with, say, our presidential candidate, and he's probably be screwed.

10. He does, doesn't he?
Imagine being mistaken for Graham.

The telecoms don't care, though. They pay everybody equally.

7. I actually agree with him.. He's a small fish in a big ocean
and his time might be better spent making sure he gets re-elected..

I would like to see some election winner (in my lifetime) say after they were elected..

"No fancy inaugural balls..times are tough, people are in need..the money we would have spent, is being donated to food banks."

9. That sure would be nice to hear.
I find all the pomp around those things more than distasteful.

11. He's avoiding it so he doesn't look too Democratic. He actually had ads touting how often he voted
WITH Bush.

8. How can you blame him?
I think remaining elected in Utah is more important. Just think of the kinds of right-wing loons he's blocking from holding office.
