NICHOLS: Impeachment Hearings are the Appropriate and Necessary Next Step
Impeachment Hearings are the Appropriate and Necessary Next Step
John Nichols on 07/25/2008 - http://www.thenation.com/blogs/thebeat/339253/impeachment_hearings_are_the_appropriate_and_necessary_next_step

As the House Judiciary Committee took up the question of how best to address what its chairman described as "the Imperial Presidency of George W. Bush," it was one of the ranking Republicans in the room, Iowa Congressman Steve King, who observed that, "We are here having impeachment hearings before the Judiciary Committee."

"These are impeachment hearings before the United States Congress," King continued. "I never imagined I would ever be sitting on this side when something like this happened."

King was not happy about the circumstance.

A resolute defender of President Bush and Vice President Cheney, the congressman was objecting to the very mention of the "I" word.

2. And the founding documents say they should too.
It is the tradition upon which the Nation is founded.
Or, quoting the grito de Doloris, "Muerte al mal gobierno."

4. I watched the entire replay of the hearing on C-Span last night & the pros won by a landslide.
The Rethugs came off looking very petty, & their arguments were obviously lame. The fact that King was shown several times walking out of the room showed that even he knew common sense wasn't on their side. Bugliosi was brilliant; so was Elizabeth Holtzman. Wish John Dean could have been there.

5. The hearings were remarkable and historic.
I loved every minute of it. Yet some around here still say, "Nothing's going to be done to the CheneyBush* admin," or "They'll all skate," like they KNOW it for certain. I'm sorry, but they're really starting to get on my nerves. I want to curse them out, but it isn't worth getting banned over. It's why I've sometimes personally referred to this place as "Defeatist Underground." And everytime you mention the word defeatist, they shout you down and say, "No, we're being realistic," and act like we're the ones who are insane. No, just because I want to save the Constitutional republic does NOT make me insane! It makes me a concerned patriot. If I'm crazy because of it, then sanity is overrated!

Peace dude!

7. I watched the "Don't Call This an Impeachment Hearing" yesterday
and agree that moving on to a hearing that can be described as an Impeachment Hearing would be most appropriate.

I agree with others that the Republicon arguments were very lame. They even waved around articles about buying yellowcake uranium from Niger !!

One laughing pro-Bush consultant apologist on the panel claimed a president could only be impeached if he stood to gain personally, and since W was acting "in the national interest" he couldn't be impeached!!

Lie about blowjob = personal, impeachable. Lie about invasion, occupation, and mass murder = national, non-impeachable !!

8. Republicans are in full denial
Which is why a vote for impeachment in the House would go nowhere in the Senate. The Repubs would filibuster, if necessary, to block any vote for removal from office. Let's wait until there is a filibuster proof Senate and a more Democratic House with a new Democratic President and THEN let's go after the whole bunch. If we act too soon Bush will just pardon as many of his fellow felons as he needs to to make sure no one will testify against him. Say what you will about Bush's "intelligence" but he is a master at covering his own butt.
