Formal group start-up request |
|
(I guess I didn't recall the official instructions properly)
I would like to start a group, and need 10 people with donor stars to agree to the group. If you would like to endorse this group, please respond to this thread (and recs don't hurt either).
The mission statement of the group, although I haven't formally worded it out, would basically be a collection of life stories, narratives, etc - preferably from periods that might get lost in the passage of time. For instance, if created, my first post will be something my mother wrote (once posted on DU) about life as a young girl during WWII. There was nothing particularly revelatory in it, but it had a ton of small details that made it come to life.
I'd like the group to be a repository for anyone that has any kind of story that we don't want to get lost in the passage of time. It could be from 20 minutes ago, or sixty or a hundred years ago.
So - I need 10 "donor" star members to agree. I do have another thread open, but I wasn't aware at the time of the requirement of the stars and the posting of the mission statement.
I think this could be quite good. If you agree, please reply.
Thanks

Sounds like a good idea - you may need to get a formal mission statement put together and repost. If you do, pm me and I will give my support again.

too much "learning from th epast" is getting lost, and in current times, being censored out of existence. Count me in and pls. pm when you are officially a group.

BUt the oral histories of the families that brought us to this point are priceless.
Fitting and proper that they have a home of their own.

I just had a very interesting discussion with my Dad about the impact of the GI bill on his life, and his efforts to get into college once he got back from WWII.
Just a bit--He was coming from a small town in Central North Dakota. He found out two days before college started that he was in. His Dad and a brother were taking him to the train station, they were stopped by a blizzard and had to stay at a nearby farm. Later that day, a stock truck had to go to the town, so they hopped a ride--4 men in the front seat, and got Dad to the train. He then sat on the train from Tuesday til Friday, waiting for the rails to be cleared. He got to college--having missed the first week of class.

I remember a lot of that time because my dad was involved in the production of the Liberator otherwise known as the B-24 bomber.

19. Thanks, all! I've made the request |
|
I'll post a link to it in this thread if it goes through.
This could be good. I'm amazed at how much history slips through our fingers nowadays. We need to capture some of it.

21. my family has seen the history of this world and lived long enough |
|
to tell us about it. My great auntie Sadie came west on the Oregon Trail and told about it. We have that as a part of our living family history. what a great idea this is. done.

24. What a fantastic idea. |

I've tried to do similar things with my family under the scope of our genealogy studies. It's a great thing to read "real-life" narratives of times in history that others may not remember or were not here for. I wholeheartedly agree with your suggestion.
