Teenage girl charged with felony murder in KCK shooting

A 13-year-old girl has been charged with murder in connection with Wednesday’s shooting death of Scott Sappington Jr. in Kansas City, Kan.

The girl was charged today in Wyandotte County District Court, after police said she turned herself in.

Authorities think Sappington, 16, may have been the victim of an attempted carjacking as he drove away from dropping off younger siblings at his grandmother’s house in the 1000 block of Laurel Avenue. He was on his way to work at McDonald’s.

Keaire Brown of Kansas City, Kan., faces charges of first-degree felony murder, or in the alternative, second-degree murder, District Attorney Jerome Gorman said in a news release this afternoon. She also was charged with attempted aggravated robbery. Felony murder charges are often filed in cases where someone is killed during the commission of another felony.

1. I hope she can get the help she obviously needs.

I am not sure what would push a 13 year old to murder someone but I can say we as a society have failed miserably when we can stand to watch children kill children and not do anything to change it.

there isnt much hope for her. Toss her prison in and throw away the key.

6. If she has fallen this bad at 13 I think we as society have contributed to her falling.

I do not want to excuse her actions but I do want to prevent other children from ever doing this. I think we need to really sit back and reflect on why a 13 year old would kill someone, what could we do that would have prevented it.

2. What I want to know is whether there were other kids involved

Many years ago in New Haven, Connecticut, a Yale student was killed during a street robbery. The culprits were caught (I forget how), and they were two older teens and a 13-year-old. The older teens named the youngest guy as the shooter on the theory that the law couldn't do much too him, since he was under 16

I wonder if this is a similar case.
