Am I the only one who won't put an Obama sticker on their car
because I think some right wing lunatic would damage my car? Plus if I caught them in the act I would crack some heads and probably end up in jail. It's a sad day when you can't express your political preference without fear of reprisal from chicken sh*t repukes.

1. Depends on where you live, I guess.
I've been seeing more and more of them around here. No McCain stickers at all. I'll be getting one for my car ASAP.

There's no point putting a target on your forehead.
These freepers are so depressed that their guy is such a bum (to be exceedingly polite) that they will probably attack anyone who points out how amazingly wrong (again being polite) they were.

I think you can get special dispensation for NOT putting your head in their cross hairs (possibly literally?!)

I am wearing an Obama T-shirt and a hat. Don't have a sticker for my car. But my car was keyed anyway.

2. Yes, you are the only one.
Put the damned sticker on your damned car.

I had mine torn off in May, but no damage done, and I replaced it.

It was different in 2004, when my car was "keyed" the very next day after I put a Kerry sticker on the bumper.

I won't be intimidated by the thugs, and you shouldn't be, either.

72. Overall, I think repub attitudes in '04 were much more hostile than now.
I was flipped off several times. One asshole followed me so closely I slowed to about 20 mph so he would pass me, but he didn't. I was going home, but decided I didn't want that piece of shit to know where I lived, so I drove to the police station instead. Once I turned in & he realized where we were, he took off, flipping me the bird.

I never had my truck keyed or tires slashed, but I was concerned I might, & I live in a fairly progressive area. But my stickers stayed on.

I had this sticker on at one time & someone wiped a booger on Kerry's photo. Harr! This is the mentality we're up against - junior high bullies. Most are not too happy with boosh now, but would never admit it.

On a positive note, after Fahrenheit 9/11 came out I started getting lots of honks & thumbsup. I noticed a definite difference in the attitude of the general public after that movie. Thank god for Michael Moore. I really think that movie opened a lot of people's eyes.

But I have had bullying assholes in huge vehicles tailgate so close that I don't dare slow down ~ and my guess is they are responding to the stickers (since it didn't happen before I had them).

It was probably just a McCain supporter. They have such a hard time reading the bold print that is right in front of them, they have to get as close as they can.

A car with shaded windows pulled up beside me just a few inches away (in a no-passing zone), and someone I couldn't see held up a handwritten sign that said "NIGGER LOVER" ~ this in 2008. Made me sick!

and you can just apply your ordinary sticker to that. I use that for all my stickers (more to avoid paint damage as my bumpers are painted too) than anything else. Though if I drive through MS next summer I may take my gay themed stickers off my car.

after I saw your post. I'm a teacher and although it's common knowledge that I'm one of "the liberals" in our very conservative community, I don't want to tempt kids by putting a permanent sticker on my car. And I live in McCain Country. In '04 I had a personalized license plate reading "DefeatW" and I was nearly run off the road a couple of times, presumably by unbalanced KoolAid addicts. I don't mind risking that again -- what the heck. But, my pretty new '08 Civic is in pristine condition and I want to keep it that way!

If you want to put an Obama sticker on your car, DO IT. If you don't, the terrorists win. The real terrorists are within the Bush administration, remember?

The worst that ever happened to me was that someone put a Bush sticker on the front bumper of my car. No harm done.

Besides, you should take a look at the Obama sticker I've got on my car...

And don't let anyone 'guilt' you into it. It's just a sticker. There are other ways to promote Obama. Stay informed and talk to people whenever the opportunity arises. Volunteer for the campaign, if you feel so compelled. You will be stressing about your car a lot if you put that sticker on it, and it's not worth it. When I lived in Utah, people keyed my car, slashed my tire, etc. when I put my Kerry sticker on it. Let's face it, too many conservatives are fascist Nazi thugs, too fucking stupid to grasp the concept of free speech. They like to destroy anything that doesn't mesh with their simplistic and false worldview. They don't deserve freedom, and they can't behave like civilized adults. Don't give them justification in their sad, warped little minds to vandalize your car.

There are also a few arrogant holier-than-thou legend-in-their-own-mind bullies here that will enthusiastically judge and berate you based on where you live, what you drive, what you eat, whether or not you own a gun, or whatever. None of which, as far as I can tell, has any bearing whatsoever on your party affiliation.

"You better stick to drinking koolaide and forget the tea"

Or (and I find this more likely) many people choose which battle to fight based on a prioritization of consequence.

Because choosing not to put a bumper-sticker on one's car is precisely the same thing and carries the same moral weight as failing to stand up for the constitution... :sarcasm:

111. I find that exercise of free speech because of cowardice ie that something may happen to you or your
property appauling. If one will not exercise the freedom to put a political bumper sticker on one's own fucking property out of fear, they certainly wouldn't stand up to someone trying to steal away any of the rest of their freedoms. And if I am nasty about it, well it's because I have watched it happen for 7 and 1/2 years. And I am totally fucking sick of this cowardice. Where does one take a stand if they are afraid to put a fucking bumper sticker on their own freak'n car that they supposedly paid for or are making payments on? What if someone told him he had to put a McCain sticker on his car. Guess that would be something he would have to do?

Being afraid of speaking out is appalling, but what is appalling is that this fear can be a realistic fear.

Aside from free speech also being the freedom to not speak, sometimes being afraid to speak can be due to real things.

117. It was his choice to remain remain silent
It was his choice to remain remain silent-- a passive use of that same Constitution you so pruriently advertise, by the way).

As for me, he may remain silent or speak his will at any time. I will not pass judgment on a person staying silent.

Nor will I use that as some type of bizarre rhetorical humping board to assume that he wants to silence anyone other than himself.

The hand-me-down quote, "I may not agree with what you say, but I'll defend your right to say it" can easily be looked at from the angle of "I may not agree with your silence, but I'll defend your right to silence". in which case, the question you posed towards me ("What else do you want to silence while your at it?") could then easily be directed back at yourself thusly, "who else do you want to force to speak up when they choose to keep it to themselves? "

Six of one, half a dozen of the other, chief.

I won't, for that same reason. I know several people here in the Atlanta suburbs who had their cars vandalized during the '04 election cycle, apparently for having Kerry bumper stickers - one had a big X scratched through the sticker and right into the paint - from what I can tell by looking at it, a screwdriver was used. I've also heard rumors of Obama bumper stickers being spray-painted over, but of course that's just a rumor.

35. Having A Gramps Sticker Here Is A Liability
Actually I still think a "W" one (and I still see a few) are the ones that get the biggest "attention" here in Obamaland. It wasn't long ago on the local hate radio station I scanned across a caller who complained how he was "afraid" to drive his car with a Gramps bumper sticker anywhere in Chicago...that he was getting flipped off all over the place and had what he called "scratch marks" (bet the stupid moron didn't know he was keyed...LOL)...so now if he has to drive in the city he takes his wife's car.

Honestly...I have still to see a Gramps bumper sticker in my travels. The other day as I was driving around Chicago's "wonderful" expressways, I saw a bunch of Obama stickers...many of them on nice looking sedans.

Sorry you're in a part of the world that is on the other side of mine...and I can relate, having once been in a heavily red area and having had my car not just keyed by spray painted for having a Mondale sticker. These days I keep mine in the back car window...clear enough for people to recognize and see and easy enough to remove if I felt it was gonna get my car in trouble.

67. Much like life, I imagine.
Though I don't know what you wrote that prompted your own deletion, it's probably just as well and illustrates remarkable restraint on your part. We on DU have a small (but vocal) coterie of individuals who validate and elevate their own sense of machismo and self-worth by tearing down others (no one person or poster is being referenced in my statement).

Stay around and you'll see them-- obvious in their implications and crass in their innuendo.

Far more often than not, I've simply put them on my ignore list-- why would one carry on reasoned debate about advanced trig with a seven year old who can barely remember his numbers past twenty? It's a waste of time...

Much like life, I imagine.

I have seen my country hijacked by a group of thieving, corrupt, lying, immoral, cowardly, disgusting bastards. Yeah, I have attitude.

And when one of these "ewwww...I'm so skeered somebody's gonna hurt my car" people, the 'please, sir, may I have another' crowd, repeats exactly what the right would like you to believe...I get attitude.

If the REMOTE possibility of a scratch on your Jeep Cherokee is more important to you than your job, liberty, home, financial security, health benefits, education, government, and quality of life, than what the hell are you doing on DU in the first place?

job, liberty, home, financial security, health benefits, education, government, and quality of life.

Wow, all from a bumper sticker. I thought working to GOTV, talking with people, working with others, donating to candidates, contacting representatives to make your thoughts known, voting, even working with petitions would be more likely to get all that than simply buying and posting a bumper sticker. That sounds rather like those who believe "supporting the troops" means buying and posting a bumper sticker.

Huh.

i had the best time with it and so did my kids. and it just felt good to have the sticker. after election i put on ten various open minded, yet positive stickers on car. i had never done it before and again, i loved it. lots and lots of people coming to me to tell me how good my stickers were. positive, and spoke truth. not attacking, ugly and negative. how i raise my children. 2006 after election i had three/four occassions from young white male driving aggressively, flippin me off. had not experienced. but right after their loss in 2006 there was a lot of anger. i took all stickers off. kids safety won.

now i have a little obama sticker but cant wait to get a regular bigger obama sticker. and i am not worried about it. just a car. but.... i have faith in my fellow texans in all their bigotry and closed mindedness not to be so ugly. has worked for me in the past.... further

because people are so racist in this area i am really looking forward to having a black mans name on my car just to say........ FU all, in love of course and a feeling of this is the way it should be. the ultimate in right

77. I put my stickers in the back window of my truck.
This way I can rotate through my collection. The one that gets the most negative response is this one:

Once in a parking lot, a man who had been behind me at a traffic light, pulled up next to me as I was getting out of my truck. He told me he was a veteran & didn't like my sticker. I thanked him for his service to our country & said that I appreciated his sacrifice so I could place controversial stickers in my window. But I reminded him that this war was different - Iraq posed no threat to us & we were lied to regarding the reason for invading. He nodded & said "Ma'am, you're absolutely right. You keep that sticker on."

Sticker or not it's your decision. There are lots of ways to support Obama. The backwash are bullies & will generally not confront you in a parking lot to discuss views, like the man above, but rather will vandalize your car when no one is looking. That's how bullies act.

And I'm in Atlanta. We live in a white, Republican suburb. One neighbor knocked on our door and asked "Why do you have an Obama

85. I don't because it's incompatible with my McKinney for President sticker.
Fuck the Money Party, both its allegedly competing factions, its useless leaders, and the quadrennial scam in which it tries to bullshit people into thinking they have an actual voice in how the country is run, who runs it and for whose benefit.

Why "throw my vote away" on a sure loser? Because I don't consider voting for a candidate who represents my interests wasting a vote. On the contrary, if I continued to hold my nose and vote for the less repulsive of the two, I'd still be voting contrary to my best interests.

Worse, I'd be voting for the idea that this country is doing just fine and only needs a minor tune-up to regain that apex of Norman Rockwell all-American wonderfulness. That tinkering around the edges will fix a system that's so completely corrupt and broken that it's become the mortal enemy of anyone who still believes the US stands for "life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness."

I'd rather support an honest person who doesn't insult my intelligence by trying to get me to believe that a demolished, rusted out 1957 Edsel is actually a new BMW with a couple of door dings. Like this:

In 2008, after two stolen Presidential elections and eight years of George W. Bush, and at least two years of Democratic Party complicity, the racket is about war crimes, torture, crimes against the peace; the racket is about crimes against the Constitution, crimes against the American people, and crimes against the global community. The racket is even about values that we thought were long settled as reasonable to pursue, like liberty and justice, and economic opportunity, for all.

We will never get a United States that is reflective of different values if we continue to do the same thing. Those who delivered us into this mess cannot be trusted to get us out of it.

As soon as "our" democrats start talking about real things -- stolen elections, war crimes, torture, crimes against the Constitution, the American people and the rest of the world, and maybe a little damn accountability for those mass murdering thieves and liars -- they'll be worth listening to.

Meanwhile, anybody feels the urge to vandalize my car because of a McKinney sticker can go ahead and have a blast. At least that might mean they know who she is.

I have an Obama sticker on my 2006 Civic, BUT I did take it off for a while. My car had been vandalized at my job while I was at work once and then keyed at the mall. I was paranoid, so I took my Obama sticker and DU sticker OFF and replaced them with band stickers that represented my views. After that, I had no problems. However, with the recent problems here in Wichita, http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=3687694&mesg_id=3687694 I am fair paranoid once again and am waiting to put my yard sign up for another month.

102. I've had an "IMPEACH BUSH" bumper sticker on since '04,
when a fellow Kerry volunteer gave me around 50 of them. I'm on my fourth or fifth (they get old and cracked after a few months of California sunshine). I keep the rest behind the driver's seat, so whenever someone on the road compliments me on it, I just reach in back and give them one!

I got some negative reaction in '04 and '05, but nothing but thumbs up since then.

103. I live in Utah...
I've had an IMPEACH BUSH and Bush crossed out sticker on my car for years and no one has tried to do anything to it.

104. I can't put any stickers on my car because of my business
I have clients who hold a wide variety of views. I avoid politics like the plague in most business situations.

107. I've never thought twice about it. Have a magnetic Obama sticker on my car. No big deal.
No hoopla. It's an election, not a street fight. Most folks realize that. And I live in a red county, politically.

112. No you are not.
I wouldn't put a bumper sticker of any kind on my car. There are just too many nut cases around and I don't want their attention for whatever reason.

116. To be honest,I have a radical car with at least 20 Bumperstickers
in rural Ellis County,Tex.Most are against the war, criticize the treatment of our veterans and middle class, but I have the usual "No W",and fully plan to put an Obama sticker on as well.To this date(knock on wood)...no damage to my car in 3 years, despite parking in hospital garages, store parking lots and big events.

128. This morning a car pulled up beside me only a few inches away...
...in a no-passing zone, and the passenger held up a handwritten sign that read: "NIGGER LOVER" ~ this guy could easily have caused an accident, so having Obama stickers does have its downside.

130. Someone keyed the side of my old Buick. Probably someone who
didn't like my stickers. It's my old work car and I could care less. I must have had pissed off some right-wing, mouth-breathing, knuckle dragger. The vandal prompted me to add two more stickers to the old car just to piss him off even more!

131. I feel like if THIS is the way I put my life on the line for my country
then so be it. It's nothing in comparison to dodging bullets.

I also agree with others here who've said they haven't had any problems.

I also have my own signs I've made that are VERY confrontational, so I'm used to . The worse thing that has ever happened is someone shot the the "bird".
