Well done Rove, Limbaugh, Coulter, Norquist, Falwell, Robertson, et al.
You have succeeded beyond your wildest dreams in demonizing "Liberals".
And the list of those responsible is much longer than the principal players listed above.

So congratulations all.
It's now open season on Liberals.
What's next?
A bounty?

There is no smiley that fits this one.

14. Shoot at conservatives? Never!!!
But I wouldn't mind putting a few thousand in prison or ruining their next big get together with a couple thousand metric tons of raw sewage.

2. Look at it another way: some unarmed, peace-loving liberals
watching a children's musical at church took down a psycho with a SHOTGUN.

So if there are any lurking wingnut psychos reading this, watch your ass...we don't back down as easily as you think.

7. Fascists have always targetted liberals. And gays. And not-the-right-religions
(first the Jews, now the Muslims). And scientists. And the "elites" (meaning all people with intelligence, unlike the rightwingnuts.) And artists.

And anyone who refuses to march in lock-step.

8. I've often predicted that someday a dittohead will go on a rampage
Or maybe a Hannitized madman, or a Beck wack will go on a killing spree.

When questioned he will point out that liberals are evil and trying to take over his beloved country...and that his radio hero further convinced him he should do something about it.

The inevitable lawsuits will change AM radio forever.

9. Nope, not buying.
That's just a cop out. The guy was responsible for his own actions. Ditto if some liberal starts shooting inside a conservative Christian church.

No excuses for going on a rampage and killing people.

10. So, the right-wing assholes who have been demonizing liberals
since Reagan have absolutely no culpability in creating a climate that makes crimes like this likely?

12. No more than environmentalists are to blame for the Unabomber.
Beacool's right. Speech doesn't create killers or climates than make crime likely. And the second we decide that it does, we open up the possibility of limiting speech. And with someone like Bush in office, I really don't want to go that route.

13. They may be a vessel for some sick people,
but most who listen to these RW hacks do not feel compelled to go and kill their fellow men.

It's not their fault as much as it wouldn't be the fault of LW pundits if someone on our side goes on a rampage.

No excuses for killing innocent people, whether they came from the right or left.

22. Um, no one's saying he can use this as a *defense* or an *excuse*.
Yes, he is absolutely responsible for his own actions.

However it does shine a light on those who espouse hatred-of-liberals, and it's up to us to point out the effects.

Finding causes for why things happen is not the same as excusing them.

24. If the messages conveyed by radio and TV weren't so powerful...
...why would advertisers spend trillions of dollars buying air time to get people to internalize their bullshit and give them money for their products?

A 30-second spot sells for $X because that 30 seconds -- probably repeated three or four times during a three-hour program -- is ample time to establish name identification, build brand awareness and create some kind of twisted loyalty to the manufacturer so the rubes will feel good about buying Ivory instead of Dove.

So what's the impact of dedicating 50,000 watts, three hours a day, to the ravings of a reactionary lardass, shit-spewing motormouth who still believes in the divine right of kings? And because he's a valued shill for the community of greedy bastards and corporatist elites, he's granted full immunity for absolutely everything.

This allows him to get away with advocating specific acts of violence, like cheerleading for right wing riots at the DNC or, more generally, vilifying anything to the left of Ashcroft as creeping socialism that must be rooted out and destroyed.

Shockingly, somebody fell for all those messages, just as any good American consumer is trained to do, and reacted by blowing away a librul and wounding another seven. Surprise, surprise...

Remember when Coulter said, "We need to execute people like John Walker (the "American Taliban") in order to physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed, too."

She said this on February 10, 2002 as a guest on Fux Nudes' Hannity and Colmes. I can only assume her subpoena is in the mail? Not that she'll have to respond to it, of course. Showing up to honor a subpoena is soooooo 20th century.

28. Couple of comments...
First, there's no way I think the shooter can use hate-talk radio as a valid criminal defense. Never suggested that. Unless he's found to be mentally incompetent, he and he alone is responsible for his actions.

But it's the organizers and financiers, like Rove, Norquist and Scaife, who have built and fed this right wingnut hate propaganda machine. And the mouthpieces and shills like Limbaugh, Coulter, Hannity, Malkin, Novak, Beck, and on and on, who have spewed their partial truths, half-truths, and outright lies.

And that whole effort, which started back in the Nixon years (if not even before) has been to brand and demonize the term "liberal".
And now this country has two political camps.
The conservatives, and the what-should-we-call its.
The not-conservative group searches for a name beside the dreaded 'liberal'.
Should we be 'progressives'?, or 'populists?, or 'civil libertarians'?
Or what?
Because the label 'liberal' has been co-opted and taken away.
The name one no longer uses out of fear of ridicule.
Or (now) worse.

Yes, it has been a very successful undertaking.
Now, maybe too successful.
But I doubt that they care.

Me?
I'm a Liberal.
Still.
