My local UU church's mission statement (I can see why Freepers hate them)
Edited on Mon Jul-28-08 12:47 PM by nam78_two
We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote:

The inherent worth and dignity of every person;
Justice, equity, and compassion in human relations;
Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth in our congregations;
A free and responsible search for truth and meaning;
The right of conscience and the use of the democratic process within our congregations and in society at large;
The goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all;

Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.
The living tradition which we share draws from many sources:

Direct experience of that transcending mystery and wonder, affirmed in all cultures, which moves us to a renewal of the spirit and an openness to the forces which create and uphold life;
Words and deeds of prophetic women and men which challenge us to confront powers and structures of evil with justice, compassion, and the transforming power of love;
Wisdom from the world's religions which inspires us in our ethical and spiritual life;
Jewish and Christian teachings which call us to respond to God's love by loving our neighbors as ourselves;
Humanist teachings which counsel us to heed the guidance of reason and the results of science, and warn us against idolatries of the mind and spirit.
Spiritual teachings of earth-centered traditions which celebrate the sacred circle of life and instruct us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature.
Grateful for the religious pluralism which enriches and ennobles our faith, we are inspired to deepen our understanding and expand our vision. As free congregations we enter into this covenant, promising to one another our mutual trust and support.

This congregation affirms and promotes the full participation of individuals in all our activities and endeavors (including membership, programming, hiring practices, and the calling of religious professionals) without regard to race, color, gender, physical or mental disability, affectional or sexual preference, age, class, or national origin and without requiring adherence to any particular interpretation of religion or to any particular religious belief or creed.

Solidarity Prayer
In affirmation of the inherent worth and dignity of every person
And in our desire to promote justice, equity, and compassion in human relations,
Let it be known that we wish to live in solidarity with each other and to rejoice in our
diversity.
We pray that all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and straight people experience justice, enjoy peace, and spread love throughout the world.
We pray this in respect for and appreciation of the interdependent web of which we are all a part.
Blessed be.

Solidarity Pledge
I will work for civil and human rights for all people, including gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and transgenders.
Civil rights are not special rights.
I will seek to stop jokes and unkind language about anyone, including GLBT persons, when spoken in my presence.
Bigotry and words that hurt are not funny.
I will speak out against any slander, debasement, lies, or dehumanization of anyone, including GLBT persons, especially when spoken by political or religious leaders.
Violent speech leads to physical violence.
I will work to stop physical violence against anyone, including violence against GLBT persons.
Violence against any person is violence against all persons.

I can see why these guys were dangerous and should be stopped :sarcasm:.
To the Freepers that hate these people: you aren't spiritual, you aren't religious, you are nothing but a bunch of hate-filled neanderthals.

1. They say you can know a person/group by their enemies
And the fact that the Fundies and Freepers hate these people speaks VOLUMES about their agenda.

Division
Ignorance
Intolerance
Subjugation
Hatred
Murder

Nice people, there.

2. But they are the ones who "God" speaks to
:sarcasm:
Sick...People whose idea of religion is homophobia and intolerance :puke:.

5. Ironically
They represent their "God" very well. YHVH is hardly a being of infinite love and tolerance, and the Fundies use Jesus as a get out of jail free card.

Here's the rub, though. If they advertised that they worshiped a god of War, Death and Judgment, they'd NEVER get a free pass by most of the world- they'd be treated like Kalists or worshipers of Hades...or lets just say it- Satanists.

It's too bad most people don't know this little fact. It could save their lives.

3. Something just occurred to me...
It's been suggested at times on DU that some Freeps/neocons hate themselves. Doesn't that automatically prevent them from loving their God -- the supernatural one, not money ?

7. I am sitting here drafting my UU congregation's letter to TVUU....
and am at an utter loss for words. I have actually had a nightmars of having someone storm my church as I'm preaching. To see it actually happen is something else altogether. And I can't help but feel pity for the gunman. I cannot imagine being that filled with hate. It must be awful!

10. a church like this
could actually make me reconsider my agnosticism... A church that doesn't judge or push a religious agenda- what a concept!

11. I used to date a Unitarian Universalist
and I can safely say they are far closer to what Jesus was like than any mainstream church. I'm no Bible scholar but I've read the book a fair amount and I fail to see how it all adds up to "Thou shalt not be a queer," which is the message you'd get from alot of mainstream Christians these days.

13. I am thinking of joining soon
I am mostly an atheist/agnostic but I can see the value of the communal experience, especially during stressful times.
I just wrote to the minister of our local branch.

16. Me too
Actually, I was raised in the UU church until about middle school, but I'm thinking about going back. I guess it can't hurt to check it out.

14. I had a feeling when I first noticed it was a UU church
that this was likely a hate crime, not just a random person who went crazy or upset with individuals. It is very sad and disgusting. How horrible to witness, or even think about a creep shooting in a church during a children's performance. This could have been a lot worse if the UU-people hadn't tackled him.

15. No kidding. The "party of life" is responsible for every domestic hate crime
I can think of.

Deluded, destructive freaks.
