Amy Winehouse Hospitalized
Spokesman: Winehouse to ER for reaction to meds

07/28/2008 5:58 PM, AP
Jill Lawless

Amy Winehouse was hospitalized Monday night for a reaction to medication and was expected to be released in the morning, representatives for the Grammy-winning singer said.

An ambulance took Winehouse from her north London home to University College Hospital, spokesman Chris Goodman said.

"Amy Winehouse suffered a reaction to medication at home this evening and was taken to the hospital. Doctors have advised that she will be kept under observation overnight and is likely to be released tomorrow," read a statement released by Goodman and Tracey Miller, the 24-year-old's U.S.-based publicist.

all joking aside why can this person not be committed? She is committing suicide in public.

6. She is, and it's sad
I'm not a fan of pop music in general, but it's been hard to miss her pictures all over the place, see her go from a slightly bizarre but decent looking singer to what she is now.

Unfortunately, we're still stuck with too narrow a definition of "danger to oneself." If she picks up a knife or gun, she can be committed, evaluated, medicated, treated, and possibly saved. If not, we'll just have to watch her keep killing herself.

49. Uh, yes. That country where Ms. Winehouse lives, for example.
From Wikipedia:

Heroin (INN: diacetylmorphine, BAN: diamorphine) is a semi-synthetic opioid synthesized from morphine, a derivative of the opium poppy. It is the 3,6-diacetyl ester of morphine (hence diacetylmorphine). The white crystalline form is commonly the hydrochloride salt diacetylmorphine hydrochloride, however heroin freebase may also appear as a white powder.

As with other opiates, heroin is used both as a pain-killer and a recreational drug.

<snip>

Internationally, heroin is controlled under Schedules I and IV of the Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs.<5> It is illegal to manufacture, possess, or sell heroin in Belgium, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, the United States, Australia and the UK. However, under the name diamorphine, heroin is a legal prescription drug in the United Kingdom, and in the Netherlands, heroin is available for prescription as the generic drug diacetylmorfine to long-term Heroin addicts.

48. That cover promotes her behavior.
"Up all night", gee, what do people do when they are "up all night", a shit load of cocaine? One of her publicists, way back when probably told her to exploit the "bad girl" image and it's turned into this. There is another article mocking drug addled Rock Stars in that issue, the one about Scott Weiland. The corporate machine is using up her image and I'm sure she has been all to willing to help them, all in the name of $$$.

8. How can people who "have it all" be so eager to throw everything away
I hope she recovers soon, but so many people would love to be in her position! Why is she throwing it all away for drugs and alcohol?

She can do whatever she wants... travel anywhere in the world... and this is what she does with that freedom??

30. Perhaps having it "all"
isn't what it is cracked up to be. I believe that these scenarios arise when people give too much spiritually to gain materially. At some point, they realize they have obtained something of no value at great cost to themselves. Freedom is a state of mind, not an economic class. It is something you choose, not something you earn.

This singer is a symbol of western culture, in some ways.

20. B.F.D.
Another soon-to-be-dead pop star. How trite. How done. How boring. Been there, done that, played that town, got the t-shirt and the blowjob. I have seen a few of my old bosses get buried, like Steve Marriott and Kevin DuBrow. And there are hundreds just like them.

It's really hard to keep your career going when you are worm food, since most recording engineers don't want to setup your vocal mike in a puddle of your putresence. Recording engineers are funny like that.

28. So did Marriott. So did DuBrow.
So did Gram Parsons. So did many others who just threw it all away for crap drugs and ugly pictures of their long, slow demise.

I have seen it. Up close and personal and gawd is it ever tedious and trite. The only thing that enters my mind is "What is it about drugs and dead pop stars do these idiots not understand, after all these years?"

5 years after she dies, she won't even qualify for points in Scrabble.

31. I used to be the same way.
But now...I'm all out of sympathy. Besides, the talent goes away long before they finally kill themselves. The drugs sap the talent to the point that they become an embarassing parody of themselves.
