So the man shooting up the church in TN is convinced that us evil liberals are ruining the country - and that "socialism" is bad and terrible and all the rest of the Right Wing crap they spout on Hate Radio. Yet, the food stamps he depended on certainly aren't on the GOP platform, nor is anything to stop Corporate America from outsourcing all the decent paying jobs.

The Chattering Class play on this man's fears and insecurities - and now people are dead, others wounded and many marked for life by such a tragic event happening in their place of worship. Someone besides Adkisson should be going to jail for this - shouldn't Incitement to Murder be a crime? It's bad enough that they manage to delude so many into voting against their own interests, but when the hateful emails and talk radio crap lead to this - there are others who bear responsibility and deserve to be punished as well. Like yelling "Fire" in a movie theater.

Adkisson, 58, who had been on the verge of losing his food stamps, remained jailed Monday on $1 million bond after being charged with one count of murder. More charges are expected. Four victims remained hospitalized, including two in critical condition. The attack Sunday morning lasted only minutes. But the anger behind it may have been building for months, if not years.

"It appears that what brought him to this horrible event was his lack of being able to obtain a job, his frustration over that, and his stated hatred for the liberal movement," Knoxville Police Chief Sterling Owen said of Adkisson.

A police affidavit used to get a search warrant for Adkisson's home said the suspect admitted to the shooting. Adkisson "stated that he had targeted the church because of its liberal teachings and his belief that all liberals should be killed because they were ruining the country," investigator Steve Still wrote.

Adkisson was a loner who hates "blacks, gays and anyone different from him," longtime acquaintance Carol Smallwood of Alice, Texas, told the Knoxville News Sentinel.

1. These RW talk show hosts egg on people like this
I don't know if that is their intent, but that is what happens.

2. Yes, he's one of millions fundamentally like him.

To analogize to the sitation among Al Qaeda, there are only a small number of suicide bombers, but the army of like minded believers from which they come is in the millons.

3. And the start of their anger is economic desperation.
Interestingly, this guy was on food stamps, yet hated liberals.

5. I don't subscribe to that viewpoint. Hatred isn't economics based.
If it were, that big ass dualie with hateful bumper stickers wouldn't be running the Yugo with a PEACE sticker off the road.

7. Some people hate, regardless.
When people are desperate and vulnerable, many grab onto anything or anyone to blame for their problems. They become impressionable. The desperation is a pre-requisite for hate, but is like a hate fertilizer.

13. I agree, however economic desperation can push folks
over the edge from a mental health standpoint. Sounds like this guy snapped. I think it is a toxic combination - continued easy sources to fuel the preexisting hatred, and societal (economic) problems adding huge stressors that can lead to eroding mental health. I don't think we will see this become a big trend, however I do think that more such tragic/heinous incidents are likely to occur.

It sounds like this guy thought he was going to die (so the suicide bomber analogy that you use elsewhere is apt), which makes me think that he thought his situation had gotten so bad that life (his) wasn't worth it - so at least he could do something "of value" (in his twisted way of thinking) on his way out.

16. Everything before the part about him being about to lose his food stamps
made me angry. But when I heard about his personal problems and realized that had he gone to that church to ask for help and would have likely gotten help, as much as they could give him, I just felt terribly sad. No, I'm not saying he doesn't also hold responsibility but he snapped and he (we) have been whipped into a hatred mentality since 9/11, so the fact that he turned his hatred outward, while horrific, was not unencouraged by the bastards running our country into the ground. Fear, fear, fear, terra, terra, terra 24/7 and then the right has the gall to be surprised when one of their minions loses it?

This just makes me feel terribly sad.

SBC (suicide by cop) was his only perceived safety net. Fuck.

23. Yes it can
In the 1930's economic desperation led virtually an entire nation into a path that included illegal invasions and genocidal acts and ultimately led to the deaths of millions and the destruction and loss of that nations infrastructure and assets.

8. And on the verge of losing his food stamps, most likely because of conservative- right wing tax cuts
Logic and reasoning is sorely lacking in people like this man. People like this need help/treatment, yet we don't recognize his problem as a problem. We just write them off as republicans or conservatives as we gear up for the next war against a made up enemy.

This kind of hate is based on a lifetime. This guy is a Confederate. Those guys are American Brownshirts.

It counters the right's ready excuse: "Oh, he's just one guy!"

10. Wm. Faulkner on Hope vs. Hate
When you have plenty of good strong hating you don't need hope because the hating will be enough to nourish you.

11. He certainly won't be the last!
Not really sure if we can call him the first either... but there yuo are!

We, as a country, are really headed into some horrible, rough times. \

I am visiting family soon, but I think this'll be my last trip home for some time, that is not business related.

I don't feel safe right now.

I'm a liberal, I want programs to help these poor miscreants, and IM sure proper mental health services would have stopped this from happening. I mean being on food stamps, shouldn't that require a lil bit of counseling on a regular basis? it certainly is hard on the ego!!!
i think the worst part of all is, as a liberal.. i really do want him to have gotten the attention/work, he so needed. I would still want to make sure he's taken care of in prison, and helped, as he is obviously a angry, sad little man.

One more thing... NOW they say he was a longer? HE WAS MARRIED!!! THAT IS NOT THE DEFINITION OF A LOANER YOU FUCKING FREEPTARDS!!!!!

ok I feel better now.. thank you :)

18. I'd love to see his defense attorney try to make the case though -
could be some wonderful sound bites on the M$M broadcasts that might open a few people's eyes to the level of hate some of these folks spew. For every listener or watcher or book purchaser - there's at least 1 other person being influenced by that person without even knowing where it comes from - just spreading the meme and the emails about how evil all us libruls are.

17. Progressive radio manages to purge its ranks of the objectionable,
lest the mission be mangled by the method of the messenger. RW radio has never bothered to screen its hosts, only their callers. Look how long Savage corrupted the airwaves with his bile. The owners of RW radio know that Adkisson is just one case of a larger epidemic, all of whom listen to their radio stations and buy from their sponsors.
