Asheboro NC is holding a vote to Legalize Alcohol today! (July 29th) the church is fighting it.
We're finally having another vote! Alcohol is illegal in Asheboro North Carolina. We are a smallish southern town run by Baptists. We are finally having another vote to legalize alcohol today.

There have been trucks driving around with signs on them, and airplanes flying over head with signs on them begging people to vote against it. There is even a giant crane on 64 with a HUGE sign telling people to vote against it. The church has poured millions of dollars into fighting this vote.

Please do not listen to them. Please vote to legalize alcohol. I myself do NOT drink, but it will do so much to help the economy and will cut down on drunk driving as people currently have to drive 30 miles to get to the nearest bar and then 30 miles back home.

Please help with this. They aren't even posting the results outside the courthouse today because they fear a fight may break out between the For and Against people if the results don't go the way it's 'supossed' to.

Wanted to let you all know. Please, if you are in the area, the polls are opened until 7 pm tonight!

2. why in the HELL does "the church" have millions to pour into
a political campaign? Someone's been fleecing the flock in NC's lesser Ashe. For fucks sake the intolerant bigoted pieces of fetid rectal detritus seem to have such a knack for fund-raising...

7. I was wrong. Or my mother had told me wrong. I looked into it
after I got off work today because I didn't believe that the million figure was correct. It was a LOT of money, but the million figure she gave me was wrong. Though some churches were donating as much as 10,000 a piece and the heavy campaigning with airplanes and cranes and billboard trucks and everything is just over the top!

I wish I could edit my original post now. I feel foolish for having believed that part so easily and posted it. :(

6. This thread should be required reading for all those who criticize us "anti-southerners"

The south still manages to live down to its stereotypes.

13. In 2006
one of the questions on the ballot was whether or not to allow liquor stores to be open on election day. Out of around 8 questions, it passed with the least votes.

At the time I was thinking have you seen the options for political office? People need a few drinks to vote or forget about who they had to vote for.

ASHEBORO - Residents of the largest dry municipality in North Carolina went to the polls today and approved the sale of alcoholic beverages in Asheboro.

The sale of beer, wine and liquor was favored by 60 percent of those who voted, according to the Randolph County Board of Elections.

According to the Randolph County Board of Elections 6,644 residents - or 54 percent of all registered voters - cast ballots in the referendum.
