I am deeply suspicious of anything that falls out of the sky that is not on fire.

4. If you live in Los Angeles and don't have your OWN emergency preparedness kit |
|
You should be slapped upside the head. Multiple times.

...but having a forum where locals can go to discuss ideas, etc. or the newly moved can go for info on how to start up would be a nice idea.
In fact it was a good idea when it was floated a few months ago.
Still is.

13. during the Northridge quake the net was the fastest way to get messages out |
|
The local phone system was totally screwed.
Dunno if Skinner et al would allow a forum for people to make connections, but it would be a good idea.

19. that would be a redundancy -- there's tons of preparedness info on the net |
|
Or do you just want a *DU* preparedness forum?
As I said in an earlier post, if you live in California and do NOT have some sort of emergency package already in place, you need to be slapped upside the head. I'm quite serious about that. Having lived through the horrors of Northridge, I know a bit about it. And as Katrina has shown me that FEMA has only gotten WORSE since we had to deal with them - you'd be really putting your life and the lives of your family members in jeopardy waiting until it happens to get the information together.
From your post, I think what you are asking for is just kind of elitist. What would a DU forum on preparedness do differently?

6. even though I thought we had enough people (2-3 times). I guess they just dont want to create one |
|
it is their toy and they can do whatever they want, but whatever.
I think it could be useful. If things are mentioned in GD they just fall off the front page.

8. What I've been doing is every time there is a story on GD... |
|
...about a fire, earthquake, tornado, hurricane, flood, etc I ask where the DU Emergency Preparedness forum is.

7. I was looking for it yesterday. Had to settle for Frugal Living, which |
|
isn't the same thing.
I hope we'll get a forum that discusses intermediate and long term disaster preparedness.
