my inbox is jammed with fucking telemarketer calls, and I'm about to throw the damned thing against the wall!!!!! :grr:

1. Yes, it does work. I recently changed my number and temporarily forgot to put

it on the "Do Not Call" Registry. I have been barraged by stupid telemarketing calls. So I just registered the new number and my cell phone number with the list.

As soon as I find out it is a telemarketer, I hang up without explanation. They don't deserve one, in my estimation.

I switched to Vonage last month.

I've cleaned out my inbox once, and still have over 50 calls in it.

and 100 missed calls. browsing thru the numbers, I see that 99 percent are telemarketers.

I am thoroughly pissed.

47. It works. However - any businesses with whom you have established relations

like a credit card or a dept. store - can still call.

Also non-profit: charity and political campaigns can call. Though there was a bill, stalled in Congress, against robocalls.

This is hard. There are so many worthy causes that I would love to donate if money was no object.

So in the evening, when everyone is at home, we let the machine picks all calls, and, of course, no one leaves a message.

We had a hail storm here last month, and all of a sudden roofing and siding companies stared to call. And I just said: you are not supposed to call and hung up. And that was it.

And when it doesn't, telling the caller that you're on the list seems to scare them into hanging up and going away, pronto.

Remember that political calls and non-profits are exempt - so you'll have to deal with them, still. Although any good non-profit will take you off the list if you request - they don't want to waste time and money calling you if you don't want to be called.

And I think it all needs to be renewed every few years... I've got to check on that for ours, come to think of it!

I don't get telemarketing calls at all, except from the likes of AT&T or other companies with whom I already have a relationship (the DNC registry doesn't protect you from that). All in all, I may get one or two "survey" calls every couple of months.

That said, I'm not sure if it's the DNCR that's responsible, because I have no basis for comparison. I put all my numbers on the DNCR the second they were set up, so I don't know what would have happened if I hadn't.

The worst offenders are long distance companies. I have solved that problem though. I listen to the pitch until they ask something like "How does that sound to you?" Then I say, "sounds great! I<'m really interested. Say, you have an office here in town, don't you?" They say yes so I say, "Could you sweeten the deal just a little? Send somebody over to blow me in the next thirty minutes? Not like I'm demanding that you do it yourself, you know."[br />
They get all huffy and hang up on me. (As they should.) Then I don't hear from them for months.

The only thing Bush ever signed into law that did a damn thing for me.

Of course we only have a home phone to support our alarm system to protect our cats.

We use our cell phones 100% of the time.

But at least the landline rarely rings.

I put it off for a long time because I was paranoid about registering ANYTHING with the guvmint, but all you have to do is type in your phone # -- no name, no address, no anything else. It's painless.

they didn't want my name or a bunch of other stuff. I don't know what else to tell you, other than I felt okay enough about it to do it and I have no regrets.

17. Yes it works for the most part, but

there are some companies who are breaking other laws with whatever they are trying to sell (extended warranties on your car, "call this # because your credit rating is at risk" are two that come to mind immediately) and they don't respect the 'do not call' list. They don't respect anything! For the most part, though it does work.

but if you ever donate to a charity or political candidate and/or party, they'll forever more have your phone ringing off the hook. (At least that's been my experience.) I finally got caller Id and that helps more.

32. Here's a little tip for everyone.

Do NOT fill out prize drawing forms you see in places like shopping malls and on the counter at stores and shops. If you read the fine print, you'll discover that filling out one of those forms and submitting it in the prize drawing creates a legal "business relationship" between you and the contest sponsor, which means they can telemarket you even if you're on the Do Not Call list. That's what some of those "prize giveaways" are all about--creating a phone list of prospects.

maybe 3 since I signed up when the list started. I just report them. There actually have been fines levied for companies that repeatedly violate the list. I have it for both my home and cell phones.

...it seems to get you added to every phony baloney police and fireman benevolence scam list in existence. Thats my experience.

I pay to have my calls screened (Privacy Manager) before they get through and it is worth every penny.

it's very handy. also, that's how I know almost all of my calls are from telemarketers.

Makes the caller identify themselves to a machine which then records them and then plays it back to me when I do answer and then gives me several options one of which is similar to DUs ignore feature. If I hit that option the person calling from that number cannot ever get my phone to ring here again under any circumstances. I love it.

I signed up for it when it first came out. Number of phone solitacians dropped significantly. It does not stop charitable solicitians (FOP, AMVets, etc), or political solicitations by candidates (Bush, Kerry etc)
