What's your position on exorcisms?
Just had to switch from the crap show of Verdict while they were covering exorcisms. The one they were showing was quite mild compared to (most?).

Anyhow, do you think these are a good thing, or a form of abuse, ignoring the obvious need for an actual doctor's intervention?

I have my own hard opinion which I won't share yet, so as not to force the direction of this thread (though, I'm sure it's probably obvious).

Be gone demon of depression, begone!

3. I definately don't believe in demon possession.
I believe that you have free will. Think what you want. If you want to believe that there are little bugs in your head, go for it.
Heaven and hell are on earth.

5. Exorcise is good for you
Exorcisms are crap, of course. Most of them are wildly abusive of the victim, who more likely than not is already suffering from some severe mental illness or ongoing trauma.

Of the exorcism, where the kid's eyeball was yanked out to release the demon.

10. Oh. Well, I'm sure that it seemed reasonable at the time.
I've read several recently in which the victims were suffocated or drowned or the like. It's a horrible business, and anyone who attempts an exorcism should, at the very least, be committed or jailed.

13. I must admit, I've seen them and they seem believable.
Yes, I have personally witness the casting out of demons in a religious ceremony and I am betting that the overwhelming majority here can not say that. The participants did so of their own free will and from what i saw most felt better afterwards. I have heard language that I could not believe come out of the mouths of people I knew and in a voice I did not recognize. I have also seen 6 grown men have to hold down on relatively small sized guy and they had trouble doing it as he threatened to kill them all. I knew somebody who said that he witnessed somebody levitate during an exorcism, and I had no reason to disbelieve him. I realize it is popular and great sport here to laugh at and mock religion, particularly Christianity and I am no longer a practicing Christian myself, but I have seen these things, for good, bad, or otherwise.

16. Two different kinds of people get exorcisms.
One type are people that need serious psychological help. They have some type of pathology that is making them behave in a bizarre way, and they have led themselves to believe that demons are the cause, or they are unfortunate enough to be in the care of a fanatical family member that believe faith is the answer instead of medical treatment.

The second type are religious fanatics that use "demons" as a scapegoat for their own sinful behavior. They have their preacher lay hands on them, roll around like idiots, act "healed", and them the rest of their church (that have probably pulled the same scam a dozen times themselves) welcome them back with open arms and praise Jee-Zus!

Either way, it's a load of shit. In one case though there actually is a problem.

Are there diverse opinions on this among educated people? You do mean the sort of thing where you "exorcise" a "demon" or something? Or is there some other type of exorcism-like some weird technique used by a psychologist or something? If so I have never heard of it.

36. Well, pretty soon we'll all get to a point where even those few of us who have insurance
will find the companies making excuses not to cover our mental health meds anymore, so a lot of folks who look down on it now will find themselves with no alternative.

Fuck, I'd try it. Not the Christian kind, though. I want a shaman in a yurt under the stars with good herbs.
