"A Whole Lotta Ugly" in Church Shooting"'
The pastor of the now too-well-known Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church occasionally wrote columns for the local newspaper, the Knoxville News-Sentinel. Last March, he wrote one entitled "Tolerance," in which he compared past intolerance of interracial couples to today's intolerance of gay couples.

"In the movie 'Hairspray,'" Rev. Chris Buice wrote, "the character Mabelle warns a newly formed interracial couple, 'You two better brace yourselves for a whole lotta ugly comin' at you from a never-ending parade of stupid.' We forget that it was not that long ago that the law forbade such relationships, even while some prominent segregationist politicians engaged in them. Today, a gay couple might encounter harassment and derision for simply holding hands in a public park."

Sunday morning, a whole lotta ugly entered the church's sanctuary in the form of a man who was angry about "the liberal movement" and its tolerance for gay couples, among other things. The man started firing a shotgun he bought from a pawnshop. He killed two people and injured seven others before he was wrestled to the floor and later arrested and charged with first-degree murder.

So now we can add liberals to the list of enemy combatants in America's culture war.

1. This is what Fox, Coulter, and the rest do to armed, unstable morons.
They push them right over the edge!

(As an aside, the shooter was apparently upset over having lost his job, blaming liberals for his misfortune. Um, who does he think sent all our jobs off to China anyway? And who does he think tried to protect his job? As always, this mad Foxhound has it exactly backwards!)

8. the only good thing about this is that the fat head wasn't shot and has
to actually face trial here. I want them to make a defense that these people 'goaded' him into doing this. what a great thing that will be.

2. I welcome all you lovely straight liberals to the heartwarming experience of being queer.
Wake up. Glad the neighbors didn't spray-paint your car.
Grab a breakfast taco with your partner, argue about housework. Glad you didn't get hit with baseball bats.
Put your feet up on your porch with some pals. Wonder if you're gonna get shot. Glad you don't.
Go to store to buy groceries, get weird looks from nasty but harmless old lady. Shrug it off.
Come home. Explain politely to other drunk neighbor--the friendly one-- for the fifth time, that no, you are your partner aren't interested in a threesome. Politely nod as he starts in on the great sex he and his girlfriend with another chick. Cut him off and tell him the frozen food is melting. Tell him you don't need help when he tries to follow you inside. Set the security alarm just in case. Do a little housework because you feel guilty.

7. Get disowned by your parents when you come out.
Happened to a friend of mine in college. Her dad repo'd her car and sent her a bill of everything he'd spent on her, too.

Oh, and then there was the friend who was raped in the men's dorm because he was the gay guy. College punished him. And the friend of mine they made come out to all of her friends (after giving the college a list they could spot-check and Student Development giving her a written statement to read to us) upon penalty of getting kicked out because one close friend she told threatened to press charges of sexual harrassment because they'd changed clothes in the same room before.

I saw what the hell my friends in college went through (small evangelical Christian hellhole), and that made me realize more than anything else that gay rights are human rights.

4. Idiot could've shot a liberal without leaving his house
Since his taxes were buying food stamps for a no-job slacker, the trigger-happy git should've taught himself a lesson.

5. Fundies & wingnuts blame modern culture for violence, yet disavow thier own culpability
The Radical Right blames TV, movies, and video games for every evil from high crime rates, to drug use, to single motherhood, to STDs.

Yet when a consumer of their media -- right-wing talk radio and TV -- commits a violent act, where is their outrage?

6. like mcveigh -- it's not an accident someone goes in
and shoots up a bunch of people who are described as some sort of enemy.

the right wing -- since the seventies and coinng the phrase 'welfare queen' -- have been pushing the violence message for a reason.

if you are gay, liberal or anything other than a conservative -- your life is in danger not from the government -- but from your fellow citizens.

it's not an accident -- and this guy is a soldier doing what he was told to do.
