Congress is poised this week to pass the most significant product and toy safety legislation in a decade thanks to your emails, phone calls and hard work.
Unfortunately, our work isn’t done. Can you believe that President Bush has said he may veto the bill?

The bill will:
* Ban lead in children’s products and toys
* Significantly increase funding and staff for safety inspections, including imports
* Give shoppers the latest information on problems and unsafe products
* Prohibit certain chemicals, called phthalates, in children’s products
Kids can ingest the chemical phthalate just by chewing on plastic toys, like rubber balls. It can remain in their system for life, and it’s been linked to serious health problems. The European Union and a dozen other countries already have similar bans.
But the Bush Administration doesn’t like the chemical ban and may veto the entire bill because of it! Industry has lobbied and spent big money to kill the ban. Media reports say the effort is led by Exxon-Mobil, which makes one type of the chemical.

Sincerely,
