Breaking News: McCain Vs. Edwards?!
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 02:25 PM by ihavenobias
What Do John McCain and John Edwards Have In Common?

Not much other than their first name. Then again they both spend a good deal of money to look stylish.

Remember how Republicans across America (come to think of it, it wasn't only Republicans) brought up ? I think there was a joke or dismissal of Edwards once every 10 minutes based solely on this topic.

Well guess what? . I guess this means all of those people just couldn't stop talking about 'pretty boy' Edwards being "out of touch" because he had and spent money are going to be consistent and bash McCain, right?

Or will they pretend it's COMPLETELY different. Really, is it? Why, because the head and the feet are at opposite ends of the body? Sure, you can get an $8-12 haircut at SuperCuts or GreatClips or whatever but can't you also buy $20 shoes at ? How in the world can I take McCain seriously if he spends over FIVE HUNDRED DOLLARS for his shoes!

PS---Oh, and did I mention they are Italian? What, he couldn't find Strong American Shoes? I don't know, I'm starting to wonder how much he really loves America...did you know ?

1. it's a stretch, mostly because McCain never pretended to be about helping the poor.

2. That assumes you accept the laughably bad argument that you can't help the poor if you have money.
Tell that to FDR.

29. Not so. That it is possible to help the poor when you're not, wasn't my point.
My point was that John McCain never pretended to be about helping the poor so the OP's desire to hold McCain to the same standards as John Edwards is a stretch.

31. Nah, not really a stretch. You're forgetting that the Republicans try to paint ALL Dems
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 07:10 PM by ihavenobias
running for president as "out of touch" and or "elitists".

So in that context it's perfectly reasonable to raise the issue of McCain's shoes. Also, Edwards wasn't bashed ONLY because of his focus on the poor. Do you honestly believe that had Edwards not talked about the poor that the haircut attacks would've been non-existent or practically non-existent?

I sure don't.

39. Why bother commenting then? And of course there will ALWAYS be other things to worry about
It's not like this issue is high on my priority list, but you realize you can play that game with just about any issue.

Seriously, it's very issue to play the "this issue is more important than that issue" game. The fact is I write about plenty of important issues (Iraq, FISA, election fraud, etc.), but call me well rounded because I also write about other things.

In addition to the obscenity of spending that amount of money on THINGS, you bring up a good point. How about an AMERICAN shoe company?

4. That's because most shoes are made in China.
I buy shoes from Europe and Brazil because I refuse to buy ones made by children or slave labor in China. There are a few brands-Munro-comesz to mind-that are still made in the USA.

I don't begrudge a guy a nice pair of shoes; I just don't want to hear him and the MSM bemoaning Obama's expensive apparel or Edwards' haircuts.

5. Oh, I don't begrudge him nice shoes either. I begrudge conservatives claiming liberals
are "out of touch".

It's not like they only did this to Edwards. Yes, they jumped down his throat because of the hair-cut, but let's face it, they do it to EVERY dem presidential candidate.

I swear, we found find a homeless person in the street to run and they would STILL try to claim he/she was elitist somehow.

9. How do you know an elitist when you see one?
By his $520 Italian loafers that's how.

Lets see if the MSM will pick up on this sure sign of elitist snobbery and brand John McCain with the "elitist" title he deserves.

20. I bet he wears silk boxers. Wouldn't want to chafe his wrinkled
old tush. I hear you can buy them for around $100.00 a pair. Sure beats going to Marshall's and shooting your wallet at 3 pair for $10.00. Either way, it is only one charge, won't make a dent in the monthly statement.

Fred Thompson wears Gucci loafers to campaign at Iowa State Fair
Published: Monday August 20, 2007

(snip)

CNN reported on Friday that presidential non-candidate Fred Thompson "is making it very clear that he is in fact running" and that his appearance at the Iowa State Fair sends a "critical signal." Thompson told CNN correspondent John King, "We're going to be getting in if we get in."

According to CNN, Thompson is wooing the conservative wing of the Republican Party, and much depends on whether he can convince them "that a President Thompson would not only push for a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage but also press aggressively to overturn the Supreme Court's landmark Roe v. Wade abortion rights decision."

On Sunday, however, Fox News hosts were laughing about Thompson's appearing at the Iowa Fair in Gucci loafers. Fox's Ellen Ratner said, "It's kind of like when Howard Dean's wife came and looked like crunchy granola. You don't go to Iowa, or any place else in the country, unless you're going to Rodeo Drive in Hollywood, and wear Gucci shoes. It's just not a smart idea."

26. Fred Thompson drove his luxury car to a few blocks away from speaking events
That's when he'd get into his red pick-up truck to drive the rest of the way.

How did that story not blow-up during the primaries when he was still in it? If a Dem pulled that laughably misleading and pathetic stunt, you KNOW he/she would be busted.

28. My problem with Edwards' haircut is that it's just bad optics.
I saw him on NOW the other day, looking as perfectly coiffed and exfoliated as ever, talking about poverty and labor issues as usual. Of course I don't think a guy has to be poor to care about poor people, but the contrast of this incredibly well-groomed politician, who could easily be taken by his looks for a televangelist or CEO, standing in a food bank with the great unwashed, looks bad. I'm surprised an image consultant hasn't implored him to mess his hair up a little by now. If you're going to be a man of the people, why not look the part?
