Doctors may have found a way to destroy HIV
HOUSTON -- There is real hope that what’s happening in a Houston lab might lead to a cure for HIV.

“We have found an innovative way to kill the virus by finding this small region of HIV that is unchangeable,” Dr. Sudhir Paul of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston said.

Dr. Paul and Dr. Miguel Escobar aren’t talking about just suppressing HIV – they’re talking about destroying it permanently by arming the immune system with a new weapon lab tests have shown to be effective.

4. No. Not Bill. he's got his faults but all things considered is a semi-decent human being.
Try Rupert Murdoch...or the entire Hampton's crowd + the house of Saud.

6. That was uncalled for....Bill Gates gives away billions
every year to philanthropic ventures.

"Philanthropy is also important to Gates. He and his wife, Melinda, have endowed a foundation with more than $28.8 billion (as of January 2005) to support philanthropic initiatives in the areas of global health and learning, with the hope that in the 21st century, advances in these critical areas will be available for all people. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has committed more than $3.6 billion to organizations working in global health; more than $2 billion to improve learning opportunities, including the Gates Library Initiative to bring computers, Internet Access and training to public libraries in low-income communities in the United States and Canada; more than $477 million to community projects in the Pacific Northwest; and more than $488 million to special projects and annual giving campaigns."

11. The problem with HIV is that it mutates so quickly
unlike other viruses. Viruses like measels and pertussis remain stable for many years, so a vaccine developed a long time ago will still be effective years down the line, generation to generation.

Influenza virus also mutates from year to year, but enough variations are on file that virologists have been pretty good at guessing which strain will emerge in time to make that year's vaccine.

That they've found a bit of RNA that doesn't mutate within HIV is great news. It means a vaccine can be targeted to that particular part of its genome, at the very least, allowing us to prevent it. It also means that drugs targeting this might also be developed down the line, curing the disease.

Any progress at all against this disease is wonderful news. As someone who was in a big east coast city during the height of the holocaust in the late 80s, I can tell you that it is killing all the wrong people.

I really, really hate this disease.

14. I was wondering the same thing.
While there are vaccines to prevent a lot of viruses, once a person actually has a virus, many of them are with you forever. It would be great if this new discovery were translatable to other diseases.

10. Oh wow! This could be the magic bullet
Scientists have been seeking for decades!

Unfortunately, that's from Fux News. But even they occasionally get something right, and I'm praying this is one of those times.

17. This was made by the Umbrella Corporation, right?
And if the vial of this stuff breaks, we get a global pandemic of undead zombies.

There ain't no Santa Claus, people. Posts like this raise false hope. Cut it out.
