Bear stuck in jug is shot and killed for "public safety concerns"
Because there are no tranquilizer guns in Minnesota to address situations like this.

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (AP) -- Minnesota wildlife officials tried for six days to capture a bear that had a plastic jar stuck over its head, but ended up killing the animal after it wandered into a city during a festival.

The wild black bear -- whose head got stuck inside a 2½-gallon clear plastic jug presumably while foraging for food -- ambled into the city of Frazee, about 200 miles northwest of the Twin Cities, during the town's busy Turkey Days celebration.

"When it got into town, our main concern was public safety," said Rob Naplin, the Department of Natural Resources' area wildlife supervisor in Park Rapids.

The bear was first reported near the town of Lake George, about 60 miles east of Frazee, on July 21.

While the bear could breathe, it couldn't eat or drink and was likely suffering from dehydration and hunger. "I'm sure there was high anxiety and frustration with its predicament," Naplin said.

3. Pitiful.
Didn't anyone attempt to contact the zoo? Or Fish & Game? There must be a Fish & Game department with trank guns.

5. Some people just get a kick out of killing animals or people.
Just like the incident with the black lab that was put to sleep the other day.

George W Bush is rubbing off on a lot of people. Death is the easiest solution.

12. It wandered into a festival
six days after it was first discovered the bear had bucket stuck on it's head. If they were waiting on a tranquiler, how was it being sent, by pony express?

16. Oh, for crying out loud
Bears wander down into this city every spring and fall. Animal control manages to dart them and crate them, usually with only minor injuries if the animal is darted out of a tree. The bears are checked out by the vets at the zoo and released on the other side of the mountains. Problem solved.

There is no reason to kill a "problem" bear that has shown no aggressiveness toward people. This one should have been darted and released from the jug, then transported away from the city.

17. So they let the poor guy go without water for 6 days before shooting him?
Look, either help him or kill him. Don't keep the poor guy in limbo!

19. That poor bear, must've been horrific. READ THE ARTICLE, they tried to trap or tranq it.
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 08:07 PM by uppityperson
"In the six days that followed the initial sighting of the bear, officials tried to trap it and tranquilize it in numerous locations, but to no avail.

By the time the animal showed up in Frazee, conservation officers decided it needed to be killed to avoid conflicts with humans.

"You don't want it knocking over a kid or getting hit by a car," Naplin said. "Showing up in Frazee escalated the urgency of dispatching it.""

I can see the point of being concerned, having a starving dehydrated bear wandering into a town. I wish they'd been able to get it freed. That poor bear.
