I remember when "Contempt of Congress" meant something.
I remember when mob hoods and crooked pols quaked in their boots at the threat of "Contempt of Congress." How about you?

Remember?

2. i know they found karl in contempt today...does it mean anything? consequences?
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 06:40 PM by spanone
found this:

The committee decision is only a recommendation; a spokesman for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she would not decide until September whether to bring it to a vote by the full House. If she does and Democrats prevail, Pelosi could then refer the contempt citation to the Justice Department for prosecution. She also could direct the House to file a federal lawsuit against Rove, as she has done with two other Bush confidants who similarly sidestepped their subpoenas: White House Chief of Staff Josh Bolten and former presidential legal counselor Harriet Miers.

6. That just gave groups another opportunity to solicit donations.
I've had 3 emails so far for funds to help them take it the rest of the way.

Sorry! I'm broke. Just filled my gas tank.

7. I do. And I wonder at our Congressional leaders who don't understand
Edited on Wed Jul-30-08 06:37 PM by sfexpat2000
that contempt of Congress is contempt of THEM and for the very position that empowers them, that gives them the keys to the kingdom.

That's stupid on skates, not to mention, sad for those who remember when things worked a little better.

10. I remember
Those were the days when Democratic congressmen stood for integrity. Those who stand for integrity now can practically be counted on the fingers of one hand. :(

11. can you give an example involving a politician?
Businessmen and shady characters -- yep. Government officials -- not so much as I recall it.

Could be faulty memory on my part.

12. No. My point is that Contempt-of-Congress was so feared that nefarious types cooperated.
I generalized with crooked pols, but I'm sure history was full of them. Art, after all, imitates life.

13. That was before Congress was contemptible.
An easy cheap shot, but they've been giving us little but easy cheap shots, haven't they?

14. Yeah, but that was years ago. We're now in the Pelosi Era.
"Contempt of Congress" has given way to "Contempt for Congress."

16. Yes, and it could still mean something, but it takes LEADERSHIP the House lacks.
The reason nothing happens is because Nancy Pelosi has failed to do her job. If she were Barbara Jordan, there would be press conferences and eloquent speeches daily until something happened. There would be lawsuits in federal court to force the Executive to toe the line.

There would be action.

Nancy Pelosi is simply not up to the job of being a Speaker. She's weak, and she's cowardly.

She's pathetic.
