I don't get it myself. I think they're fierce athletes.

Oh, and there's that contingency on DU that thinks any "sport" is a waste and people that play them and/or watch them are morons.

2. I don't know
Some folks have a problem with bathing suits on tv, others have a problem with sports in general. The combination of the two has to freak some folks out.

8. I sleep with a vball player and coach and I gave birth to an eventual vballer
so I'm defensive of my peeps. as for the bathing suits - is there an issue with the male players or are we saving this disdain just for the women players?

13. Heh... I'd prefer the men don't wear speedos!
But hey, that's just me!

It's not much difference then say... gymnastics.

My guy is a football coach. My youngest boy is just starting freshman football. My oldest boy is incredibly good at karate (proud mommie moment). I like sports, I think sports can help children develop teamwork skills. Other folks here despise all sports.

 Nothing to loose sleep over. People will always find something to hate on.

By the way, my son played fb all 4 years in high school. He was really passionate about it. Wide receiver. It was fun watching him do what he loved doing...and watching make touchdowns!!! Is his dad gonna be his coach?

34. Unfortunately no
My guy (not their dad) actually lives a bit more then an hour from us. It's going to be tricky juggling the football schedules this year. I expect I will be missing some of my guys games for the first time in 5 years. I am totally thrilled that my youngest wanted to play. Scared too, because he was the kid his entire class picked on for years and years (he has social development problems). The other kids on the team are treating him great and looking out for him. I feel much more comfortable about HS with him now.

36. Hey, back the fuck off. I don't watch either, and not for those purposes. I have no TV
Nevertheless, in threads about the sport it's plain to see by people's comments that the clothing (or lack thereof) of the players are the main interest of many of those commenting. For this reason it somehow fails to get the same respect as other sports which rank lower in the ogle factor. There's the reason for you, so you can take your rudeness and ride out on the high horse you came in on.

7. I don't.
Fantastic athletes. If badminton is an Olympic sport, I can't see fault with others, especially not beach volleyball.

Running, jumping, hand-eye coordination, throwing oneself on the ground, strategy...

26. I was trying to explain that there aren't many competitive beach volley ball
leagues in Upstate New York which is why the notion of this as an Olympic sport is amusing. Dressing the female competitors in bikinis may be true to the roots of the sport but does carry a hint of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. Clearly , the Olympics has exposed a lot of people to this sport and they've been impressed by the athleticism involved.

FWIW - cheerleaders are another group that demonstrates athletic skills but get no respect.

19. I dunno. Badminton gets serious billing and that's not even comparable.
My guess is that fantastic bodies in bikinis on the beach are seen as sex objects first and Olympic athletes second?

I would like to see anyone picking on it jog through sand for more than 30 seconds.

Little girls were twirling ribbons in the air.

I haven't looked at the Olympics since.

47. If you've ever played "twos" on a sand court, you know the naysayers are assholes
Being a man, I don't look nearly as good as Misty or Kerri in a bikini, but anyone who thinks this is about the skimpy suits is just a dipshit. Do you people realize the amount of court two people have to cover? No arm-extending giant-head rackets. Just you and a 15x15 square of sand. I play at a Mens B level, which is tough but absolutely nothing compared to what Olympic twos are playing. It's seriously hard play. People who bitch about it are simply ignorant.
