also loves peace signs, which are available on many things now. I don't think that it is so much the war, I think it is the cultural influence of 'that 70's Show', which both of my daughters love.

You don't put on your peace earrings to go to an interview without some purpose in mind. The message she is sending is antiwar! That doesn't mean she is pro union, or pro single payer health insurance, obviously. It means she is antiwar. Any way you slice it, she is not going home to put up McCain signs in her neighborhood.

I'd check more into where her parents have donated politically if you want to get a more general read of Shawn's political leanings.

Not that children subscribe to their parents views 100% but it would probably give you a more accurate sense of what she's grown up around politically.

I saw other athletes with the earrings on. Mom thought maybe someone gave them to the athletes for PR.

I think Shawn made a very conscience decision to wear these bright/white earrings to make a statement.
She is 16. she doesn't want her friends to be drafted to war.

Although kids might not tell their parents or other adults about pushing Peace.. that wouldnt' be cool. They know what is up and what is in their future.

I believe she knew exactly what she was doing. There are others I might wonder about.
As for the Peace sign, I think it can be just a fad. I don't think a lot of people
put any thought into its real meaning. As for Simpson and some of the others, they may
have thought it meant "Piece."

that I see featured so often at the Olympics...they make me want to retch.

By contrast, Shawn's family appears very down-to-earth, and word is they took out a second mortgage to pay for the gymnastics training--a very risky move these days.
