The nomination roll call of states is playing live here in the Blg Tent. Everyone has just erupted in applause as Hillary called for the suspention of the rules casting of all votes for Barack Obama. Some began chanting "OBAMA! OBAMA!" Sen. Clinton is on the floor with the New York state delegation. "Barack Obama will be our president!" "Suspend the procedural rules." The Big Tent erupted in applause several times and now Pelosi has announced that Sen. Obama has accepted the nomination. My understanding is that Tygrbright is possibly in the hall watching it live right now. In honor of the roll call, here is a quick posting of politicians I have come across here in Denver.
Other beaking news is that members of Tent State and Rage are heading toward the Pepsi Center, reportedly 4,000 marchers, coming from Blake and Broadway, quite a few blocks away. I do not believe they will make it down here, because reports are that police are donning their riot gear to respond. I will have pictures of the police and protesters in a separate thread.
Sen. Mary Landrieu says: "Hello, Democratic Underground."
As reported earlier, Gov. Patrick Deval of Massachusetts came in to do a live-blogging event in the Big Tent.
Here is Patrick giving his speech to probably a larger audience last night in the convention hall:
. This is my favorite Chelsa and Sen. Clinton photo from last night. The angle of view is from my position on the Still Photography Press Platform, where I spent most of last night with other press-credential photographers. Kudos to DNC staff member Janine for doing a hard job with such grace.
It took some looking, but I finally found an alternate delegate. "You're my first alternate!" I told her.
While out at Civic Center Park, I came across Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, a Democrat. He was telling the police they were doing a great job. I was not aware at that point of the previous night's arrests and violence, so I did not ask him any questions.
No Sen. Obama sightings (of course), so I thought I would post the next best thing. These action figures were being sold by their designer on the 16th Street Mall. I bought one ($15) to bring to the DU Meet-up tonight.
And finally, my Giuliani sighting. Apparently he was headed to the hall to do an interview dissing Obama's support for Israel. (Check Larisa Alexandrovna's blog.) As I mentioned in a previous post, I said "You guys sure are walking fast." Rudy responded, "We're in a hurry to get there." I thought of saying "Considering your campaign for president, are you sure anyone wants to hear what you have to say?" I have self-censored quite a bit here in Denver. DU was nice enough to get me credentials and I wanted to hang onto to them.
The Rocky Mountains were gorgeous this morning, although I don't plan to tap them like The Daily Show staff did last night. As Elad and I enter the center on the interstate off-ramp, we and others are greeted with a billboard promoting Oliver Stone's "W." The tagline for all to see is "Anyone Can Grow Up To Be President."
