Nine people who were part of a veterans march, including a nun, this afternoon in St. Paul were arrested on suspicion of trespassing after they climbed a security perimeter.

The people were part of the Veterans' Memorial March, which started at the state Capitol and was headed to the Xcel Energy Center.

When the spur of the march reached the back of the Landmark Center, several people jumped a five-foot security fence at about 12:50 p.m. They were stopped by police when they got to another fence that is eight-feet high, though one woman was able to get under the second fence before she was stopped.

The group was surrounded by Ramsey County sheriff's deputies wearing helmets and face masks. They were given water and allowed to talk to the media. After some time, deputies handcuffed them and led them into the Landmark Center.

The rest of the march turned around when the spur went off and headed back to the Capitol.

The people arrested included David Harris, a march organizer, Sister Betty McKenzie and Jeanne Hynes.

Harris has said the purpose of the march was, "to point out the utter failure and futility of war and the suffering that results from it."

By 2:30 p.m., police said two of the protesters had been cited and released. The others were being booked at the Ramsey County processing center and were expected to be released later this afternoon.

1. can someone help me with the geography of this?
I used to live in the Twin Cities, and I'm looking at a map of downtown St. Paul, but why was the Landmark Center blocked off? Is a huge area of downtown off-limits, not just the Xcel Center?

2. I don't know for sure, but there probably is a good area blocked off from access except
for people with credentials and blocked off to traffic. It depends on what supplementary buildings and parking areas are being used, and I would not be surprised that the Repubs have more area blocked off than the Dems did.
