HEADLINE: McCain's 'soul mate' Sarah Palin in 'Bridge to Nowhere' flip-flop

WASHINGTON - John McCain called Sarah Palin his pork-barrel-busting "soul mate" Sunday for killing the $233 million "Bridge to Nowhere" in Alaska, but she was actually for the bridge before she was against it.

Public records and her own statements show that the Alaska governor was a supporter of the bridge from Ketchikan to Gravina Island (population 50), but flip-flopped last year in what her political foes have called a bid to catch McCain's eye.

When she was running for governor in 2006, she was asked whether she backed continued funding for the bridge project and said, "Yes, I would like to see Alaska's infrastructure projects built sooner rather than later. The window is now - while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist."

But last September, Palin turned against the bridge. She said the island deserved better transportation but "the bridge is not the answer."
