A darn good question that y'all may not have thought about
As an aside, I was wondering what Mitt Romney’s sons were doing now that they weren’t doing their patriotic duty to get their father the nomination? It seems to me that they are now free to enlist.

1. They're probably boating on Lake Winnipesaukee, no doubt!
Maybe they should enlist but they won't.

2. Rich men's sons don't fight wars
if they can possibly help it. Only when it's a war of survival and they get shamed everyday by everyone they meet do they reluctantly do their duty, always as officers and usually far behind the front lines or up in the air.

I'm sure they find the idea of going off to fight in this war utterly preposterous, completely against their birthrights as members of the ruling class.

4. Both McCain and Palin have sons headed to or aready in Iraq
This is not a topic we should bring up. It won't serve us well.

5. Magoo is from a military family, long military tradition
and don't forget that Cindy is the rich one.

Palin is blue collar with ambition. She is not rich nor is her husband.

7. I don't want it brought up as a campaign issue - I just thought it was a valid question
given the statements during the campaign.

8. Really?
You're kidding, right?

I could probably name hundreds but I'll start with just two rich people who had sons who were in combat.

FDR and Teddy.

One more, Me.

3. I don't get this logic....
Why do you think the kids should enlist based on their fathers support of the war? What does that have to do with the kids? Last I knew anyone old enough to enlist was old enough to make up their own mind and not have to take orders from mommy or daddy. I know that I would never try to make a decision like that for my child and I don't see why some people seem to think others should.

6. They made a big deal about how they weren't serving in the military
because it was more patriotic to serve in their father's campaign. There's a link at the blog post.

9. The problem is the argument you'd have to make.
That theirs is false patriotism, that true patriotism means you sign up for the military.

That a stance you personally want to take? No?

Me neither.

Patriotism comes in different forms. For some, it means saying bad things about *. For others, it means public service. For yet others, it means signing up for active duty. Nobody gets to define it and impose their definition on me; I'm not going to define it for others and impose it on them.

I may define it in a way that I think should apply to others, simply because I'm likely to have a rather decontextualized definition (such is my training). But I draw the line at rebuking and coercing them to fall into line behind me.
