Republican convention set to open

Monday, 1 September 2008 18:04 UK

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/7592297.stm

The US Republican Party is preparing to open a national convention that has
been scaled back because of the threat of Hurricane Gustav to the Gulf Coast.

Senator John McCain, due to accept his party's nomination for president at the
event in St Paul, Minnesota, said it was no time for party politics.

The party will conduct only official business on the first day and review other
events as the week goes on.

President George W Bush cancelled his planned opening night speech.

Meanwhile Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, nominated as Mr McCain's running mate,
said in a statement on Monday that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter was pregnant.

The mother-of-five, who is opposed to abortion, said her teenage daughter would
marry the father of the child and would "have the love and support of our entire family".

'America first'

Vice-President Dick Cheney has also dropped plans to address the convention on Monday because
he is going ahead with a trip to Georgia, Ukraine, Azerbaijan and Italy, the White House said.

First Lady Laura Bush, also due to speak on the first night, will now introduce a series of video
interviews with governors of the states affected by Gustav.

McCain's wife, Cindy, will then appeal to delegates to give donations and support for hurricane
relief efforts after the storm has passed, campaign aides said.

McCain makes himself a high ball....

McCain helped volunteers pack boxes of supplies for hurricane victims

6. Pity the poor press who will have to blow this thing up to make it look important
Edited on Mon Sep-01-08 02:23 PM by ThomWV
If regular rank and file Republicans can not see how unimportant their input is in striking the future of their own party with this show of ineptitude I don't know what it will take.

They can't even get the leader of their own Party to show up for their Convention and the excuse he used was known to be no threat at all by noon today. He could be there in an hour for a surprise appearance if he wanted to or if anyone there wanted him to. Besides that look how many others are avoiding their own shindig. Senators, Representatives, and you can bet a good number of potential pocketbooks, are all staying home acting like they never heard the word Republican. C-Span will show you a vacant room but the rest of them will try to blow it up like it was an actual event with actual decisions made and actual concerns addressed - which it is not.

Do you? I wouldn't want them there. They'd be the jerks with the lampshades on their heads, ya know?

13. The Worse it Gets, the Better it Gets
This is getting funnier and more enjoyable all the time: first, no Bush and Cheney, because they are so hated; then others don't want to come and all have "reasons"; then the convention time will be severely cut back, from five hours I think it was, to two-and-a-half; now Calif. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger will not be there because of "the ongoing budget crisis" there--hah! This is the American people turning against all of their arrogance and hate, their corruption, crime and obstruction of investigations, their killing of our economy and people, and cold lack of response to it, and all the rest. Remember, this is the first real chance, since the 2006 elections, that the American people have actually had to express a clear opnion that the media can't hide or cover up, and has to report!

14. I think you're on to something! Remember all his
"cancelled" fund raising dinners too? And wasn't one
switched to a smaller venue because no one was showing up? :P

17. 100% correct
which is why they're hiding behind a hurricane that is no threat. This is going to be fun.

16. If your party knows that it can't match the other party's
Convention, it's easy to play magnanimous and shout that it was no time for party politics.
Now we'll hear the reason why the room is empty is Gustav.
Fuck McStorm - he isn't fooling me. Everything is politics for Rethugs.
