In Honor of LABOR DAY: Union Members Past & Present Check In!
National Education Association

National Treasury Employees Union

:patriot:

Cued up Woody Guthrie's Mo Asch Recordings, Vol. 3, "Hard Travelin'", which is chock full of union songs. We also went to a nearby neighborhood Labor Day parade, and saluted the local unions!

12. Absolutely
ALL workers. Currently, I am in a non-union job myself. But I like to give a special shout-out to our union brothers and sisters, whose numbers continue to be endangered these days. Labor Day was created in recognition of all workers, but unions are what made possible many of the benefits we now take for granted - 8 hour workdays, OT pay, minimum wage laws, etc. Next up: Single Payer Health Care!

Or, are you going to sing a refrain of "Solidarity Forever" while claiming to be some kind of hotshot defender of the working class?

Union of Needletrades, Industrial, and Textile Employees
Communication Workers of America

Currently in an unaffiliated local organization, but we are talking about affiliating with either the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers or the Association of Federal, State, County, and Municipal Employees.

Today: the whole family marched in the local Labor Day parade; I walked with the dems, while davsand and material girl walked with Jobs With Justice. Afterwards we went to our local Central Labor Council picnic. Good day...

36. Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workers of America
May it rest it piece. The companies broke the back of the union in the 1970s and 1980s, and wages have never come back. And it was mostly red-blooded, all-American scabs that helped.

41. CWA, IAU, Culinary Union & Musician's Union
The CWA - Communications Workers of American and IAU-International Association of Machinists were two of the best organizations, I suppose it is because of worker participation. Although I'm retired I'm still involved in some aspects of the CWA.

The Culinary Union local was one of the most corrupt locals of its time(late 1970's). the president, vice president, treasurer and secretary were all conviceted of extortion, pimping and pandering and embezzlement the feds took it over and eventually the local merged with the SEIU and on the up and up these days.

The Musician's Union catered to jazz and big band musicians by the time I joined. since I was playing in rock n roll, soul and blues bands at small venues it really didn't benefit me in any way. The older guys I knew who were member had some great stories. I had a card and paid dues but never got any gigs through them.

my dad organized for the CWA and was a member of about 10 different unions.
