Obama Cuts Short Rally and Calls for Moment of SilenceDETROIT – Senator Barack Obama cut short an appearance at a Labor Day rally here, calling for a moment of silence for those in the path of Hurricane Gustav.
“Today’s not a day for political speeches. I hope you’ll forgive me. I hope you don’t mind,” Mr. Obama said. “Today is the day for all of us to come together as Americans and send our thoughts and prayers to our brothers and sisters who are worrying at this very hour.”
“I know that John McCain wants what’s best for the people that have been evacuated. I know George Bush wants what’s best and so do I,” Mr. Obama said, speaking beneath a clear-blue sky, with Canada in the distance. “So I want all of us to come together.”
Before taking the stage here, aides said, Mr. Obama spoke to Herbie Johnson, the deputy director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Mr. Obama was told that the extent of the damage would not be known for several hours, aides said.
“I will be monitoring it all day,” Mr. Obama said, urging people to give to the Red Cross or contribute in whatever way they could. “We are prayerful this will not be the same situation we saw three years ago.”
Mr. Obama had no immediate plans to cancel the rest of his Labor Day appearances. He is scheduled to attend a picnic in Monroe, Mich., before flying to Milwaukee for an evening appearance. Aides said he would return to Chicago late Monday night and had no immediate campaign plans for Tuesday.
