5. Amy?
What's up with the police in MN? They seem a bit overzealous. I do have to comment the police in Denver. It seems they were more restrained, and they also foiled that assassination plot.

genuine welcome committee by committee. Even pushing down the Code Pink woman seems markedly tame by comparison.

31. Looks like they're deliberately minimizing the number of protesters
like they always do.

http://www.twincities.com/rnc/ci_10356224?nclick_check=1

Police initially estimated the crowd at 10,000, but then revised it sharply downward an hour later.
...
Immigrants, labor groups, veterans, student groups and others gathered for the rally, which was to walk about a mile and a half from the Capitol to the site of the convention and back.

Bet that initial count was much closer to the truth, probably even higher, since the article mentions groups in different locations.

35. This country has flipped fucking out :(
Some of the comments under the article are something to read. "As I look out the window of my downtown condo, I can tell you with absolute certainty, these protesters are not peaceful.

They are braking windows as we speak. Flush these turds out of our city!"

That's probably some fucking shill posting but would like to hear more about this. Can that posters info be verified?

And we have the typical idiots saying "shoot them" among other garbage.

I really don't think these people understand exactly what they are supporting when they support gassing, beating, arresting and any other abuses towards fellow Americans.

I am very troubled for our country

So it stinks if the idiots running around breaking store windows are bringing a crackdown on the genuine war protestors.

In 1991, covering the independence movement in East Timor, Goodman and fellow journalist Allan Nairn were badly beaten by Indonesian soldiers after they witnessed a mass killing of Timorese demonstrators in what became known as the Dili Massacre.<6> She has speculated that the only thing that spared her the fate of the Australian-based journalists who were killed in East Timor in 1975 was an American passport; the United States was providing military support to the Indonesian army at the time. The U.S. did not cut off military aid to Indonesia until 1993.

27. Read more from JoeIsOneOfUs' link:
http://www.twincities.com/rnc/ci_10356224?nclick_check=1

Local police and Minnesota National Guard units are using a combination of pepper spray, concussion grenades and tear gas on a group of breakaway protesters gathered on Kellogg Boulevard in downtown St. Paul. The group of about 150 protesters, many thought to be with the group "Funk the War," had been blocking traffic for much of the afternoon.

At least one person — a young man wearing a gas mask, no shirt and a backpack — was taken into custody. He lay down on the street as a group of officers surrounded him and took him away.

Police also escorted a group of 17 mostly black-clad youth across the Robert St. Bridge in an apparent effort to get them out of downtown.

Rubber bullets were fired into a crowd at Seventh and Robert Streets. At Seventh and Jackson, police have more than a dozen people in a parking lot as police handcuff them. Police continued to spray the crowd with pepper spray. More details are to come.

56. If masked protestors can be called "criminals", can we call the cops "felonious criminals" too,
with weapons in addition to their *armored* masks, and conduct citizen arrests of them AS WELL? This is so f'd up!

I remember Democracy Now and Free Speech TV reports from the Democratic Convention last week also saying that those cops there were unprecedented in not carrying badges or other identifiers of them as law enforcement. If a whole gang of these thugs came up and started storming through the streets (and perhaps are Blackwater and not even cops), aren't they guilty of what they were supposed to be arresting these folks for? 64. Who are those masked men?
Could they be plants?
Why yes, they could.
I mean, why would anyone else go about breaking windows while armed with hammers?
Thousands of people protesting the war and repuke policies and some guys are running around with hammers breaking windows.

69. No protester would use a hammer. They'd use a dual use stick like a cane.

Or a heavy umbrella. I.E. something they'd have a reason to carry if questioned.

82. smashing things? try "a handful," not a hundred.
i was in seattle during wto, quite by accident. tv reports in no way mirrored what i saw that week with my own eyes.

yet, because people had seen the tv reports, they didn't believe me. they "knew" seattle was full of broken windows & property damage. only it wasn't.

As many as 50 people were arrested near East Seventh and Jackson streets since 5 p.m., including legal observers, street medics and Amy Goodman, host of the radio show 'Democracy NOW!' There was a large bus on site to haul the detainees away.
