The rw Fundies better walk a fine line over rejoicing about teenage pregnancy.
Many teenage girls in this country that will get pregnant will not have the resources to raise a child if they choose to keep it. the better start reeling in their line of "at least she isn't aborting it".

1. Here in Colorado, the fundies were upset that . . .
. . . provisions were being made by Denver Public Schools to accommodate girls who became pregnant while in school.

They said it encouraged teen pregnancy.

So, I just wonder what they're saying about THIS???

7. The exact same thing happened at the high school where I taught.
The school had a well-run, self-sufficient teen parent program that did not cost the district a dime. But because it "encouraged teen pregnancy" the fundies got it shut down. It "sent the wrong message," you see.:puke:

I honestly think the Palin's teen daughter situation will NOT play well with people of this ilk, despite what their leaders may say on TV.

8. I think you're right.
In public, they'll be all supportive and whatnot, but behind closed doors in the prayer circle, they are CONCERNED.

Read: Really pissed off.

9. Because it's always a lot easier to judge and condemn than it is to realize that people are fallible
As a former Catholic, I've been exposed to the "hate the sin, love the sinner" line a few times too many. It's an insulting, condescending statement, to be sure, but even more insulting is the fact that the person saying it almost never believes it. It's more like "hate the sin, condemn the sinner." And the infants in this situation are condemned, as well, just by the circumstance of their birth.

2. I strongly agree. Many times it is the end of a teenager's education when she becomes a mom.
Often these girl's remain unmarried and live in or close to poverty as well. How is a household like this going to support itself never mind compete in the global economy.

Not to mention it is not healthy for babies to be born to teenage girls. Teenage girls have high infant morbidity and mortality rates.

11. Any incidence of disability would drop through the floor with proper prenatal care...
which just goes to show they say one thing and believe quite the opposite - they care about their slogans and moralizing far more than children and babies.

Postadoptive reactions of the relinquishing mother: a review.

Askren HA, Bloom KC.

Deer Valley OB/GYN, Mesa, AZ, USA.

OBJECTIVE: To review the literature addressing the process of relinquishment as it relates to the birth mother. DATA SOURCES: Computerized searches in CINAHL; Article 1 st, PsycFIRST, and SocioAbs databases, using the keywords adoption and relinquishment; and ancestral bibliographies. STUDY SELECTION: Articles from indexed journals in the English language relevant to the keywords were evaluated. No studies were located before 1978. Studies that sampled only an adolescent population were excluded. Twelve studies met the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. DATA EXTRACTION: Data were extracted and information was organized under the following headings: grief reaction, long-term effects, efforts to resolve, and influences on the relinquishment experience. DATA SYNTHESIS: A grief reaction unique to the relinquishing mother was identified. Although this reaction consists of features characteristic of the normal grief reaction, these features persist and often lead to chronic, unresolved grief. CONCLUSIONS: The relinquishing mother is at risk for long-term physical, psychologic, and social repercussions. Although interventions have been proposed, little is known about their effectiveness in preventing or alleviating these repercussions.

Psychological disability in women who relinquish a baby for adoption.

Condon JT.

During 1986, approximately 2000 women in Australia are likely to relinquish a baby for adoption. A study is presented of 20 relinquishing mothers that demonstrates a very high incidence of pathological grief reactions which have failed to resolve although many years have elapsed since the relinquishment. This group had abnormally high scores for depression and psychosomatic symptoms on the Middlesex Hospital questionnaire. Factors that militate against the resolution of grief after relinquishment are discussed. Guidelines for the medical profession that are aimed at preventing psychological disability in relinquishing mothers are outlined.

Social factors associated with the decision to relinquish a baby for adoption.

Najman JM, Morrison J, Keeping JD, Andersen MJ, Williams GM.

Department of Social and Preventive Medicine, University of Queensland.

Little is known about the characteristics, social circumstances and mental health of women who give a child up for adoption. This paper reports data from a longitudinal study of 8556 women interviewed initially at their first obstetrical visit. In total, 7668 proceeded to give birth to a live singleton baby, of which 64 then relinquished the baby for adoption. Relinquishing mothers were predominantly 18 years of age or younger, in the lowest family income group, single, having an unplanned and/or unwanted baby and reported that they were not living with a partner. These women were somewhat more likely to manifest symptoms of anxiety and depression both prior, and subsequent to, the adoption, but the majority of relinquishing mothers were of 'normal' mental health. The decision to relinquish a baby appears to be a consequence of an unwanted pregnancy experienced by an economically deprived single mother rather than the result of emotional or psychological/psychiatric considerations. These findings document a particular dimension of the impact of poverty on health.

12. For real.
Holding Bristol Palin up as some kind of hero is not going to go over well with a lot of parents. Let's face it, a lot of people who are uncomfortable with abortion know deep down that they'd drive their daughter to the clinic in a heartbeat if it happened to her.

16. they're fairly impervious to their own hypocrisy
and they'll just claim those teens having babies that can't afford them should have thought about personal responsibility and adopted the baby out...and no, they won't get their hypocrisy in that either.

they firmly believe that at least she didn't abort...and what happens after the fetus is delivered isn't exactly high on their list of concerns..

18. ha--it is extremely hard to deal
with fundies. they have no logic skills, I know that from experience. I was over at a fundy site today--tried to tell them that Palin and McCain suck--but I think I ended up getting deleted/banned.

There is a couple of people over there that were REALLY pissing me off--they claimed to Democrats--but were obviously freeper types. If anyone is bored it would be cool to try to thump some sense into their stupid heads. There is a thread about Palin on the main board. Don't know how much good it would do--but every vote counts. I didn't do well--but I am not very eloquent....if someone who really writes well could go over--we may be able to get a vote or two...a few of them seemed to have a brain in their heads....
