There are 3 groups who will vote Republican no matter what.
The three groups who will vote Republican even if McCain eats a live baby on stage are:

1. Religious fundamentalists, because they've taken some kind of blood oath never to vote for a pro-choice ticket. They vote on the issue of abortion and abortion alone. They are unswayed by anything else. A lot of people mistakenly think that this group can be wooed away by pointing out the hypocrisy of "family values" Republicans. Don't bet on it. They will wipe the tears of disappointment from their eyes as they press the Republican button at the poll.

2. People who think that the McCain administration will benefit them personally and don't care about anyone else. This group is much larger than it ought to be - that is, there are a lot of people who mistakenly believe that the McCain administration will benefit them personally. We can eat away at this group by getting the word out about McCain's tax and economic policies.

3. People who have decided that they hate Democrats. They'll vote Republican every time just out of pure cussed meanness. These are the people who organize rallies and drive their friends and neighbors to the polls just to make sure that their side "wins." They think that politics is just like the Olympics. They're as unreachable as group #1.

A lot of us are hoping that the obvious hypocrisy in Sarah Palin's behavior will eat away at her support among Group #1, the religious fundamentalists, but it won't.

Our best bet is to get the word out about Obama's economic plans, and the fact that Obama's tax plan means lower taxes for everyone earning under $250,000, and the same taxes for everyone earning under $600,000.

1. Great post.
You are absolutely correct. So many claim they are dissecting the Palin girl story to showcase the hypocrisy of the mother. IT WON'T WORK THAT WAY. It will simply make her appear a sympathetic character.

I have three daughters. I took all three of them out bra shopping today. My oldest is nearing that precarious age and has what can now be considered a fairly serious relationship. I absolutely do not want the GOP limiting my girls' access to birth control when they reach the stage where they need it. I will do anything...even bite my damned tongue, to ensure that the GOP do not remain in power. I believe we are doing ourselves harm (ie. frenzied stalking of a group of teenagers) and those of us that know it have no choice but watch it happen. Many here will not listen to any the the reasoning behind the pleas to tone it down. It is disheartening.

Hopefully any voters who have been wavering from their strict Republican voting practices due to their disappointment in the Bush administration are listening to Obama tonight and his gracious behavior/comments about respecting the privacy and freedom of the children who have NOT signed on for it all.

4. One other thing
We need to get the 18-30 year old voters out in force. I think this group, more than any other, is Obama's base, but the reality is that, statistically, this group is hard to get to the polls in large numbers. Some how, some way, we need to change that this time around.

9. I'm not necessarily opposed to highlighting the hypocrisy of the Republicans.
I just don't think it will work particularly well. It won't hurt us, except that it wastes our time.

18. I have only anecdotal evidence to support this
Republicans I have met don't think hypocrisy is such a bad thing. It seems it is more important for them to project and say the right thing than to actually do the right thing.

19. That's certainly supported by their actions. In fact, one would infer that Republicans admire it.

3. I think just about everyone here knows fundies are unreachable with logic..
Fundies don't do logic, they do emotion and cognitive dissonance.

Now the fundies have one of their own on the ticket the Second Coming wouldn't change their minds. In fact they are the same ones who insisted Jesus had to be crucified and they'd enthusiastically do it over again in the blink of an eye. They are modern day Pharisees.

The people we are trying to reach with this are those who have kids (or grandkids) and are squeamish about their kids (especially girls) having sex but aren't really full blown fundies. Pointing out the staggering cognitive dissonance between what Sarah Palin advocates and what she actually does has a chance of reaching some of these squeamish folks.

Fundies are totally immune to cognitive dissonance but not everyone, even fundie fellow travelers, is that brain dead.

You left out a group that won't vote Dem no matter what.

Racist bigots.

Even with a white candidate, they won't vote Dem.. With a black candidate they would rather die.

11. Good points. My point is that the fundies are influenced by only one factor: abortion.
Everything else is expendable to them. Everything.

15. absolutely!
It makes the choice very easy for them, too--is the person pro-choice or not? Decision made! I have talked to my mom until I'm blue, but it makes no difference. I've told her that the repubs will do nothing about abortion, that they want it as a wedge issue, that they know that 70% of us are pro-choice, that even if Roe v. Wade were thrown out it would go to the states who would not outlaw abortion, etc etc. Falls on deaf ears. To her it is a sin to vote for a pro-choice candidate.

16. I know some people who feel the same way. There is no reaching them.
She and I agree on just about everything, including the fact that abortion is a sad thing. However, she lives in a shadowy brainwashed world where abortion is the only issue. As you say, they think it's a sin to vote for a pro-choice ticket.

They would vote for satan himself if he promised to overturn Roe v Wade.

6. Our best bet is to get OUR base out to vote
we outnumber them by a significant margin. Screw the Right Wing. We'll never win any of them over to our side. There are far more registered Dems than Repugs. If we get the majority out on election day we'll crush McCain.

10. That means that we need to be vigilant about the polls.
The Republicans always try to turn people away from the polls. You know what that's about. We have to fight it this time.

14. Maybe you can't get the to vote for Democrats but you can discourage them from voting Republican.
I don't so much give a dam if they don't vote for a Democrat so long as I can talk them out of voting for a Republican. It doesn't bother me a bit to see a Republican stay home from the polls. That's why its worth the time to talk to them.

Thanks for pointing out the (should be!) obvious!

The yet-undecided voters will not be swayed by these types of rumors/attacks. We have to strike with information and positives.

25. excellent post,
I just read "Obamanomics" in the St. Petersburg Sunday Time, and I was very impressed with our candidates (?) knowlege of taxes, etc. I was unaware that he was also a Chicago University schooled person. The article was amazing, if you're interested, go to the St. Pete Times website.
