Palin is a TRAITOR
Wouldn't any secessionist group automatically be considered a treasonous group? And as a member of a secessionist group, Palin herself is a fucking TRAITOR.

Great job, McCain! Let's see how your ex-POW ass gets out of this one!

4. Do we want a secessionist in charge of the nuclear launch codes?
Scary thought.

8. Unless the group advocates a violent secession it is not illegal
I can advocate secession through the ballot box or through legislative work and that is not considered treason under the law.

19. Secession itself is illegal
Just because a state passes a secession referendum doesn't mean that they just get to leave.

9. I hope you can give a thorough argument why Gov. Palin is a secessionist.
If you can't argue your point convincingly, this thread belongs in The Lounge.

Do you understand the value of proper communication? That is what I'm asking for, on behalf of everyone who doesn't know what this thread all about. Thanks for understanding.

11. Do a little research yourself...
News on her affiliation with the AIP (Alaskan Independence Party) is now being confirmed by ABC

http://blogs.abcnews.com/politicalpunch/2008/09/members-of-frin.html

"Officials of the Alaskan Independence Party say that Palin was once so independent, she was once a member of their party, which, since the 1970s, has been pushing for a legal vote for Alaskans to decide whether or not residents of the 49th state can secede from the United States."

<snip>

"Earlier this year, Palin sent a video message to the AIP for its annual convention..."

I watched it, and I have to say, I am underwhelmed. I definitely believe in your cause, though.

12. Besides the fact that she was a member of a secessionist group?
Oh please. That's like claiming that someone wasn't a racist even if they were in the KKK.

16. Threads with links are always helpful when you don't know what someone is talking about.
Right now, I have no idea what you're talking about.
Guaranteed, neither do 2/3 of people reading DU right now, if they are like me and have just returned to the internet after Labor Day weekend.

Good lord. I guess I could get hired for an entry level PR job right now. I would explain it to them.

20. I'd assumed that people would have seen at least one of the other countless threads
There are tons of threads readily available on this topic. Do I really need to include a link to verify this story in every single damned thread?

You do realize that she is the GOP VP pick, right? Or do you need a link for that also?

13. The AIP is an accepted political party in Alaska
They function on the premise that they want their vote they shoulda had in 58 as to whether to become a state, territory, commonwealth, or independent nation.

So they're not "trying" to secede (technically), they're for being able to vote on whether or not to secede. ;)

21. A lot of my state's natives think secessionism is kewl.
Here in GA, you still see people clinging to the Confederate battle flag, and getting very, very upset when it's suggested that such symbols ought to at least be consigned to museums.

I want to believe, and generally do, that on balance a pretty serious majority of real-life voters will add up this VP candidate's support for such extremist views as secessionism AND aerial wolf-hunting AND drilling in the Wildlife Refuge AND amending the Constitution to criminalize abortion.

But the base sucks this up and redoubles their effort to elect their hero(ine).
