This is America. We don't jail journalists here.

Americans need to see this footage & letter to CNN and NBC News (which oversees MSNBC) to demand that their networks cover this important story. I hope you will too: http://act.credoaction.com/campaign/dont_arrest_journalists/?r=1376&id=796-1247191-12FIV.x

A free press is supposed to be a cornerstone of our democracy. But journalists are being arrested at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minn.

Award winning journalist and host of "Democracy Now" Amy Goodman was arrested by St. Paul police while covering a protest outside the Republican National Convention. Though clearly identified as press, Goodman was charged with "obstruction of a legal process and interference with a 'peace officer.'" Two of her producers were arrested for "suspicion of felony riot."

You won't believe how upsetting this arrest was until you see it. Click here to watch the video, then take action.

Goodman and her producers were released last night. (An AP photographer was also arrested and released). But the charges are still pending.

Amazingly, this story has been virtually ignored by the mainstream press. The cable channels are providing extensive coverage of events related to the Republican National Convention, but there has been a virtual news blackout on the arrest of Amy Goodman and the "Democracy Now" team.

Americans deserve to know that journalists are being jailed for trying to do their jobs. We must demand that CNN and MSNBC include this story in their coverage of the RNC.

Click here to e-mail CNN President Jonathan Klein and NBC News President Steve Capus to demand coverage of this brutally important story.

Thank you for working to build a better world.

Kate Stayman-London, Campaign Manager
CREDO Action from Working Assets

Watch the video, then demand that CNN and MSNBC cover it.

Take action now!

5. I forget where I heard this today - maybe Thom Hartman - maybe MSNBC -
A journalist was pushed to the ground while they were "detaining" Amy and her crew.
The guy had a bunch of expensive cameras hanging around his neck.
He was yelling...
"Hey! I'm a journalist! I'm with the press!"

And then the money line.

"I'm with such and such newspaper...IT'S A REPUBLICAN PAPER!!"

You can't make this shit up.

8. We arrest journalists who don't follow lawful commands of the popo and then physical resist their

"escort" just like anyone else.

Having said that, the original arrests of the two Democracy Now producers sounds like BS, but I'll wait to see the tape.

20. Maybe, but Amy wasn't arrested for being a journalist -- she was arrested for

not stepping away from the police and then resisting the police as they escorted/pushed her toward away.

Anyone would have been arrested for that in that context. I would except to be arrested in that situation.

22. Then, you are satisfied to live in a police state and you are not alone.
What you accept and expect are the conditions of a police state, and frankly a large percentage, perhaps a majority, of people do accept the yoke of servitude, look at just about anywhere in Asia, for one example. Singapore is an orderly, clean, and nearly crime-free city, that doesn't make it any less a police state.

24. Hyperbole. There is no police state in MN.

Amy was arrested because she thought she didn't have to listen to police when they were doing crowd control.

25. There may have been police abuses that need to be addressed, but Amy's arrest

was not one of them. She was arrested because she didn't think she had to listen to the lawful commands of police.

Good German? Give me a break. Amy was released quickly -- not sent to the gas chambers..

29. I'm beginning to think
I'm beginning to think that calling someone a "Good German" is merely the last resort of the overly dramatic bit players in some absurd scene-- much like right-wingers calling someone a "dirty commie" when the Logic Tank begins running on fumes.

28. Nothing new. Going back to 1789....
It's nothing new. I think that the final death knell of the short-lived concept of a media free from corporate and governmental influence was hammered into law in 1789 when the Sedition Act was passed.

A free press? It's a nice concept, but I don't think it's ever really existed-- here or elsewhere.
