Bellevue ignores restriction on campaign signs (THANKS ACLU)

Marta and I moved to Bellevue in Nov., 06. I didn't want to change my ID after the move.

BELLEVUE — The city of Bellevue has agreed to stop enforcing an ordinance that prohibits campaign signs in front lawns until 30 days before an election.

The Nebraska chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union has taken exception to the ordinance.

ACLU Nebraska director Laurel Marsh says the U.S. Constitution guarantees freedom of speech — not “freedom of speech for a given period of time.”

Some residents have already put signs in their yards supporting either Republican John McCain or Democrat Barack Obama.

The ACLU has fought such ordinances across the country with notable success, including one in Lincoln that prohibited residents from displaying campaign signs more than 30 days before an election and more than 10 days after.

Last week, Lincoln Mayor Chris Beutler’s office announced the city would no longer enforce the ordinance.

1. Check out
Collier-vs-Tacoma In 1990 I ran for US Congress on the liberal side of a DINO. I put up signs 88 days before the election, the city had a 60 day limit. The city came in and told the people to get the signs down and they didn't they came into yards and took them, in addition to threatening to fine those who had them in their windows. I took the case to the Washington State Supreme and we won 9-0 I was projected to get about 8% of the vote but wound up with 40+% of the Democratic vote that year. The ACLU is who took my case-they are great!!!
