Poor economy boosts alcohol use

Even as the economy goes down the tubes, people, apparently, still want to drink -- even more so than usual.

According to state officials, tax revenue from sales of alcoholic beverages was up nearly five percent for the months of June and July compared to the same time last year.

The numbers are somewhat surprising considering rising food and fuel costs coupled with a stalled economy, a bleak housing market and a dim economic forecast.

Locally, though, many bars, restaurants and liquor stores aren't reporting much of a revenue boon, with some even complaining that sales have actually dropped off.
