Sarah Palin Genuinely Pisses Me Off
After listening to that disingenuous tripe Sarah Palin called a speech I simply could not remain silent. Frankly if I don't voice my utter contempt for Sarah Palin to someone I think I might explode so, rather than allowing myself to spontaneously combust, I'll tell you why the worst part of Palin's speech is probably something you and everyone else in the world probably won't even notice.

I reckon to help you understand this I'll have to start at the beginning, but not the beginning of the speech, but the beginning of me.

Despite that I chat with a lot of you every day chances are you don't know this cuz it's not something I discuss often so let me let you in a little something. I am disabled. I walk with a cane and a full length brace on my right leg. Why? Because I was born with a birth defect called Spina Bifida. In it's least damaging form it basically just causes a curvature in your spine that many that have spina bifida don't even notice.

In my case it meant that I was born with a curvature of the spine, two missing vertebrae at the base of my spine and severe scare tissue covering all of my right leg and lower back. The scaring was so intense and left me so sick that when I was born the doctors weren't even sure I was going to live.

Now (and I say this knowing many of you will suddenly think I'm a dumby because I believe this, but anyway...) by God's grace I'm still alive and kickin', but the fact that I am as well adjusted and independent as I am today is because of the sacrafices my mother made for me to be so. The biggest of which was joining the United States Navy a few years after I was born in a bid to make sure that I as her dependent would always have proper medical care.

Because of the coverage she got through the Navy I was able to be followed at special clinics wherever we moved to that specialized in treating special needs kids like the ones Sarah Palin mentioned tonight in her speech. Special needs kids like her son. A special needs kid just like I was.

I heard my mother waking up before dawn damn near everyday for nearly two decades, venturing out to serve her country and ensure that I would always be cared for. It wasn't always something I could fully appreciate as a child, but now, as an adult, I get what it is she did for me. Which is how I get just how much Sarah Palin insulted her this evening with her completely fake and hollow appeal to parents of special needs children.

"Sometimes even the greatest joys bring challenge.

And children with special needs inspire a special love.

To the families of special-needs children all across this country, I have a message: For years, you sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters.

I pledge to you that if we are elected, you will have a friend and advocate in the White House."

A very sweet sentiment and one that makes sense, right? I mean as everyone knows... mostly cuz she's been using the kid as a political prop since the second it popped out of the womb (whomever that womb happens to belong to), "Sarah's" 5th child was born with Down Syndrome, a severe genetic abnormality that will impede the child's developement both mentally and physically. It makes sense that she'd be not only committed to her special needs child, but all of them. It makes sense as a parent that's faced the challenges of having a child that has problems that require extraordinary attention she'd be sensitive to other parents that face the same struggle each and everyday, sorta like my mom did.

That's what makes it so unfortunate that it's so patently obvious she could give a good God damn about any of those kids or their parents.

As it turns out little Miss Advocate, during her short tenure as Gov. of Alaska, didn't just trim the special education budget of her state... she gutted it, slashing the budget by 62 percent.

In 2007, before she came in as Governor, the special education budget for Alaska was a bit over $8.2 million. In 2008 the budget dropped a hair... to $3.1 million, a number that will stay unchanged through the 2009 school year.

Check for yourself: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=389x3915534

This treacherous, lying, self-aggrandizing, charlatan who promised to work for those who struggled just like my own mother did, and who no doubt fell for her "compassionate conservative" crap because they surely wanted to believe that finally someone was really looking out for them, had every opportunity to establish a record of that which she boasted of on a national stage did nothing of the sort. In fact she proved that in truth she doesn't give a damn about any special needs child who doesn't have the last name Palin. Or at least not any whom she can't tote around as a political prop to show how holy and righteous she is. I mean after all, she knew the kid wasn't gonna be much, but she didn't kill it, right?

IS SHE NOT MERCIFUL?!

This woman is utterly loathsome and she insults the hard work of men and women who struggle everyday to give their kids who were born with disadvantages the same care and independence my mother struggled to give me. She insulted them and my mom with every hypocritical syllable that she uttered. I've disagreed with many a politician, but I can honestly say that even President Bush has never ticked me off the way this woman just did and that's saying something

This slight will not be forgotten and I will do everything I can to let the world know just what kind of lying hypocrite they might have sitting a heartbeat away from the presidency.

and I don't think that many of us here will think that you're crazy about the reference to God's grace being responsible for your well being. I agree with you on your thoughts of this woman. I can't stand her also because of her treatment of Gods creatures- the wolves and the polar bears. Many Christians feel that we should be stewards of Gods world.

I'm not a Christian, nor do I believe in sin, hell and damnation, but she claims she does. I know they can justify their actions because they're plain psycho but I'd like to hear their justification, just out of curiosity.

You piece is well written. Obviously nothing wrong with your mind or your talents.

12. K&R

Your mom is magnificent - a real hero(ine).

There's something really corrupt and (I'm sure) illegal about this money thing with ol' Porky Palin. She cuts so much, yet leaves deficits borrowed so much, and yet gets so much federal money... where does all of that go? And to whom? It drastically doesn't add up.

Her child doesn't need anything, so she doesn't care. Typical Repub thinking. She has no conscience.

And she has a big, obnoxious mouth. :puke:

that needs to be shouted to the masses. I was thinking this exact same thing when she said it and was so loud in my exclamation of disbelief at her blatant lying, my husband came in from the kitchen to find out what she'd said (he'd retreated there to escape her voice! Gah! it was enough to drive anyone away!)

I like to think of myself as the worst of the worst of the "fundie atheists" (I use the term tongue in cheek, of course...but I am pretty bad hehe...check out RT forum). And I would never, ever consider you dumb for thinking that your alive by gods grace. Although I don't believe it was god...I believe it was your own inner strength that left you alive...I don't think you need to hesitate to post your own true feelings. None of us are going to rip you apart for that.

Aside from that, great post. Palin is one of those power hungry fucking idiots who would step over their own child to play with the elites. I have no respect for her at all.

Help for special needs children is for her child, not anyone else's child. She also cut funds for pregnant teens - funds that would help them learn a trade and stay in school. My husband and I are spending our retirement funds to help our special needs children. Others I know have sold their homes or are in bankruptcy because of the costs of raising a special needs kids. I am incensed over her use of Trig as a prop. Praise be to your mom and to you.

36. The woman is bereft of both conscience and empathy and INSULTS people ....
... of good conscience who DO NOT NEED to BE a parent of such a child in order to strive to ensure such needs are met. It appalls me when she ASSUMES that BEING a parent of a special needs child is not only a prerequisite but a CERTIFICATION - never mind that she shuffles the kid off to others because she (quoting Cheney) "has more important things to do."

Bravo, kiddo. Your words are courageous and conscientious. Good on you.

I have lower lumbar scoliosis that has resulted in sciatica - 25 years of chronic pain, now, after a lifetime of 'limitations.' As a child, we weren't 'blessed' with the financial resources to have the kinds of medical examinations and diagnoses that would have informed my parents (or me) of this condition. Thus, I lived most of my life being told I just wasn't trying hard enough when I had pain running ... in high school, in the Academy, in Army basic training, etc. Little did I know.

The moment she raised her voice to declare herself an advocate for special needs children while the camera quickly panned to her husband, the alleged father, uncomfortably holding the prop...baby. She is a manipulator of the worst sort and if this is really the GOP's answer to Obama, because that's what this is, they figure 'people like him because he's new, so we'll get someone new too', they'll be in for a surprise come November.

56. Thank you
I ran across that info about her budget slashing and now you've personalized it. I'm quite sure you aren't alone. Others certainly must have noticed it too.

57. My mom and I were noting the tremendous disconnect
between what the media bubble thinks of her speech, and what they're demanding we all should think of her and her speech, and what the average person really thinks of her. Most people see her for who and what she really is, and see McSame's veep "choice" (word is he really wanted Lieberman but wasn't permitted to by repub leadership and so this was his "fuck you" to them, knowing full well what a ridiculous choice it was) for what it really is. "Vicious" is how one 70-something friend of the family, who's never ever been known for any major liberal leanings, described her, as well as "unbelievably disgusting and stupid" for her "Iraq was sent by God" comment, and this woman is a longtime Christian! I'd add dangerous to that as well. And now that she's gotten a taste of power and adulation, she's especially so.

What I wanna know is why isn't HER patriotism being questioned? In the 1990's, she was a member of the Alaska Independence Party, and Todd Palin was a member well into 2002. That is a virulently extremist anti-American party who, by their own platform and admission, do not even consider themselves to be Americans. Why the hell isn't THEIR patriotism being questioned???????

your post clarified it for me. Thank you and hope you are doing well.

Edited on Fri Sep-05-08 12:40 AM by Blue_In_AK
and I want to thank DUers such as yourself for pointing out things that this Alaskan, at least, had not been fully aware of. Sarah has made it a point here as governor to be cheerful and bipartisan, getting lots of publicity for things that are perceived as good for Alaska's economy, energy issues, cajoling legislators of both political parties to vote her way on her projects, but obviously doing things in the shadows and unpublicized that we mere citizens cannot be made aware of.

You need to send her back to Alaska. A lot of her diehard constituents will still think she's cool and will rally around her, but the Independents and Democrats have learned a lot of unsavory things that they didn't know before, or things we knew but just kind of shrugged off as inconsequential. I mean, how much harm could she do in Alaska after all? There's only 600,000 of us. But for God's sake, don't turn her loose on the country, not with her executive record here, cutting all these programs, and with the attitude they've pumped her up with. I have to repeat again -- no one from McCain's campaign vetted her in Alaska. They didn't even talk to the Republicans here, supporters or detractors -- and she has plenty of Republican detractors.

I don't care about all the tabloid part of it, but we have learned things about her priorities that are disturbing. If you send her back to us, maybe we can deal with her on our own -- finish up these investigations, take another look at that Trans-Canada deal (which I don't like at all). You all have done us a favor by exposing these things. Now, please do everything you can to see that she's not elected. I can't promise you Alaska, but I'll do my best to get the word out.

We need to trumpet Palin's vile hypocrisy far and wide. How dare she use her own "special needs" child as a political prop, while denying help to others?

I can't believe what a nasty piece of work this miserable excuse for a woman is.

67. Pile-on Palin - impale Palin as Jon Stewart tonight.
But keep bright lights on McPrickly. ON Rove /ivor/ Schuenman. *

All those flowing "he's his own man, speaks his mind, says what he thinks" does he know?......................... does he not know
his own reversals of positions...flips&flops..that debate with himself? As Kerry put it well.

*Schueneman--on stephanie mlller her sideman said translation in german is 'barnman'. Yep shovels manure. Then recall what that's been used for

i had a typo..so easy to do puke for pile

72. I too am disabled, had the same feeling...
I didn't realize her record was such, but I had the exact same feeling when listening to her speak.

Thank you for this information, hopefully this type of rhetoric will be shown to the voting public, if only the mainstream media wasn't so caught up with just that, rhetoric.

I too was disabled from a car accident in '95, left with paralysis and significant internal injuries from a lap seat belt, thank you Nixon...

73. She's turning out to be the perfect Rovian
She's using the same tactics that a whole slew of Bush appointees did when they sat in the confirmation hearings and lied their asses off. Do anything, say anything, promise anything, tell any lie, put on any disguise in order to win approval, and once you've been handed power by people stupid enough to give you the benefit of the doubt, do whatever the freak you want and give them the finger because you know there's nothing they can do about it.

74. I'm certain this won't be well-received, but
she didn't cut the Special education budget- she increased it. 12%. For all her faults, this isn't one.

http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/speced/2008/09/gov_palins_budget_for_special_1.html

They just broke their Special Education budget into two line items, and only one is getting quoted.

77. McCain's shrewd choice.
the gullible thinks she's a strong leader. Meanwhile they discredit reporters on her scent searching for her deep dark secrets. And its not nice to attack women, even if they are bitchy. It will take some real finesse in knowing how to handle this bi... .Yes, she is offensive. So how do we handle her snide nature.. And to hear, McCain says he wants to end partianship. what a line of crap.

I could smell the unmistakeable scent of self-serving scumbag. It's no less disgusting a scent than that of rotting flesh. Perish the thought that that odor would permeate the White House ................................ for another 4 or 8 years after the stench of Bush/Cheney's reign clears out! :puke:
