I sure didn't understand Palin. Hockey mom, well I guess that's a qualification. Do they play hockey in D.C. and uh when will she have family time for her son...

1. Do you think Obama will have all kind of family time as president? Stupid argument |
|
Being a mother is not what defines a woman. I'm sure there is hockey played in and around Washington.

5. A very stupid, very sexist argument, that has so far only been asked by right-wingers (ie. Dr Laura) |

6. I have to agree NOT SEXIST |
|
Come on people, it is NOT sexist to think that a woman with 5 kids, including a 4 month old baby, AND a pregnant teen should not be running for Vice President. If she where a he the same truth would STILL apply. Get real. This is ridiculous. SHE SHOULD NOT RUN EVEN IF SHE WERE ACTUALLY QUALIFIED.
FAMILY VALUES MY ASS.

I'm sorry but that argument is disgusting, whether it comes from the right or the left.

9. It speaks to her priorities. She's putting her political ambition |
|
before everything else. God knows who's tending to that four month old, but he was being passed around like a hot potato (credit Howard Stern this AM) last night.
Everyone, man and woman, needs to strike a balance between the demands and obligations of both family and career and determine priorities. Palin has put career first. You're right That's not sexism. It's just reality.

8. It's pretty sexist to say that Palin can't be VP because she has children. |
|
I would hope we would be above all that.
I think she's unqualified for many reasons but not because she's a hockey mom.

Are we that unable to speak the truth now? MAN or WOMAN no parent with those kinds of responsibilities of THAT many children including a special needs infant, and another baby on the way, MOTHER OR FATHER, should seek a job that is that demanding of time and requires that much travel. How can it be sexist when it applies to a woman or a man equally? I wouldn't want a father of a new born baby who needs extra care, plus 4 other children, including a teen about to be a mother, to take this role either.
I think our elected officials should be parents and spouses, men and women alike. But different offices call for different levels of commitment and time from their elected officials and it is foolish to cry sexist when it is clearly not. It is irresponsible of her, or any MAN, to be in the situation she is in and make this choice. It is self-serving and selfish. For a man or a woman. NO if she were a man it would not be ok for HIM to leave the care of the children to the wife or nannies. I don't believe this is a good role model for mothers anywhere.
She's a bad mother in my point of view and that matters in my opinion.
And to clarify I never said she should, "Stay home with the kids." But she should pursue a career that takes into account the other choices she made in life, such as mothering 5 children. THAT is responsible, period.

Palin for that very reason. My own Hillary supporter mom's reaction: "She and her husband have 5 children. One's a pregnant teen. One's a Down Syndrome baby. What the hell is the matter with this woman that she doesn't put her family's needs first?"

It's nice for someone to talk sense, not politically correct garbage. Are we that far from honesty that a little truth about the situation incites cries of "SEXISM!"
Please.
To quote an awesome comment on other site, "Feminism has never been about getting a job for one woman. It’s about making life more fair for women everywhere."

14. Yes as I understand it feminism is about treating and regarding women as equals |
|
When you choose to have a baby, you should also choose to treat that baby responsibly.

15. Yep. Every person, man and woman, needs to |
|
strike a responsible balance between their career choices and family obligations. If you choose to have 5 children, you had damn well better take responsibility for raising them. That's just reality. I swear some of the posts on here make me think people believe kids raise themselves, when the reality is it's a big job, every bit as important and frequently more challenging than a paid one. As Jackie Kennedy famously said, "If you bungle raising your children, nothing else you do matters very much."

you damn well please no matter what your circumstances. It's about equality and the freedom to make choices taking the totality of one's circumstances into account.

17. As a male, I would have NEVER accepted the offer under her circumstances. |
|
Not only would I think it more important to have more time to spend with my family, I would have abhorred the thought of putting my pregnant teenage daughter in the spotlight like that. McCain should have seen and realized that, Palin should have realized that even more so. The fact that she doesn't shows how fucked up her priorities are. I don't think this is a sexist argument at all, it would apply to both men and women.
