Sarah's position on abortion is only popular among the right wing lunatic fringe

By circumstance or reasons

A January 2006 CBS News poll explored under what circumstances Americans believe abortion should be allowed, asking the question, "What is your personal feeling about abortion?" The results were as follows:

"Permitted in all cases" 31%

"Permitted, but subject to greater restrictions than it is now" 16%

"Only in cases such as rape, incest, or to save the woman's life" 30%

"Only permitted to save the woman's life" 12%

"Never" 5%

Palin Opposes Abortion Even in Cases of Rape and Incest

Palin is not merely opposed to abortion rights.

She said when she entered statewide politics in Alaska that she was as "pro-life as any candidate can be." She takes the militant position of opposing allowing women to choose to terminate pregnancies even in cases where they have been raped. She also opposes allowing abortions in cases of incest.

"I am pro-life," Palin wrote in response to a 2006 questionnaire from the conservative Eagle Forum. "With the exception of a doctor's determination that the mother's life would end if the pregnancy continued. I believe that no matter what mistakes we make as a society, we cannot condone ending an ending an innocent's life."

1. As someone else on DU put it...
...her position is equivalent to a Rapist's Bill of Rights. Because if this were the law, then a rapist could choose the mother of his child, without her having anything to say about it.

We really need to get that phrase out there. People need to have their thinking challenged on this. Right now, the only emotional hook in the debate is "killing babies". We need to change that. This is an opportunity to do so.

2. I am guessing that she is opposed to the Morning After Pill.
If a woman is raped wouldn't that be the first option to take?

3. Some good data here: "On solid ground: over 35 years, abortion polls show remarkable consistency"

THe cached version contains the FULL article: http://64.233.167.104/search?q=cache:gUvUbSwTrP8J:www.accessmylibrary.com/coms2/summary_0286-34857396_ITM+poll+legal+abortion+%22all+or+most+cases%22&hl=en&ct=clnk&cd=16&gl=us

excerpt:
Through the last 35 years, however, the support for legal abortion among the American public has not deteriorated. In 1973 after the Roe v. Wade decision, Louis Harris & Associates found 52 percent favored "the US Supreme Court decision making abortion up to three months of pregnancy legal" and 41 percent opposed it. Support and opposition has moved up and down marginally in Harris polling, dipping to 47 percent in favor and 44 percent opposed in 1974 and rising to 60 percent in favor and 37 percent opposed in 1979, before settling back down to 56 percent in favor/40 percent opposed in 2007--virtually the same as in 1973.

Other surveys lead to the same conclusion. Our firm has asked whether Americans agreed or disagreed that "it should be legal for a woman to have an abortion" four times since 1998--always finding six in ten agreeing (four in ten strongly) and a third disagreeing (a quarter strongly). See Table Two.

In another example, polling for ABC News and the Washington Post has shown virtually no change in the aggregate levels of support and opposition to abortion in the last 10 years among registered voters. In 1996, 24 percent of voters said they thought abortion should be legal in all cases and 34 percent legal in most cases, 25 percent illegal in most, and 14 percent illegal in all. In 2008, the ABC/Washington Post poll obtained virtually the same result: 21 percent legal in all cases, 36 percent legal in most, 25 percent illegal in most, and 15 percent illegal in all.

4. If she wasn't too chickenshit to take questions maybe they could ask
Why she thinks a RIGHT WING EXTREMIST could get elected after the right wing extremist regime that just fucked everything up beyond all reason.

5. someone help me understand Repubican sexual politics ? please ?
Edited on Thu Sep-04-08 03:58 PM by dusmcj
so why is it that I get the sense that the Republicans' ideal sexual universe would be one of overweight and depressive teenage girls, at least 1/4 with STDs, and many with one or more poorly kept babies, pining away in some trailer for some reliable man among all the unreliable men they've been able to find so far ? Is my perception correct ? I base it on (of course) their views on birth control, abortion and women's roles, together with the faintly extraordinary phenomenology of Palin mere and Palin fille both of whom after all seem to be fecund little creatures.

Is the real issue that the Republicans have with normal sexual behavior that it gets in the way of an America where all women are Tammy Wynette yammering "Stayund bah yur Mayun", or alternatively a horde of baying Katy Perry zombies, fresh from belting out "Ur so gay" and now proclaiming that a hard man is good to find ? (I prescribe silicone novelties and a crate of AA batteries. $5 please, consultations aren't free you know.) Entitled minds want to know... I guess all those doughy little GOP white boys with receding hairlines and flushed complexions spent too much time watching 50's TV while their mommies did the ironing in pumps and a girdle. With stockings. (OK OK and they were wearing a dress too, sheesh. The mommies were wearing a dress, you idiots, not the little boys. Gawd, the things we have to put up with.)
