Come on people. Read the Goddamn post before you respond!
Someone else must have had this happen to him or her on DU.
I have been coming to this site for four or five years now and just recently started posting. Been my favorite site for just as long. I love to do serious writing with research involved, like my post about a GAO report that uncovered some damage from 47,000 possible superfund sites.
Nevertheless, humor is also a part of life, and not necessarily a bad part. But every time I write something satirical, bar none, someone posts a negative comment without reading the post. Even when I posted negative, humorous posts, captured off McCain’s website, someone accused me of being a republican. Never would have happened if they had read the post. Or even part of the post.

This will help everyone in the long run. It will save the posters aggravation, and save the repliers from looking like morans.

2. Sorry, but on any big site like DU, you get some chaff with the wheat.
I acclimated.

11. And sometimes you have to search for the wheat amongst the chaff.
On a site this big, the laws of probability
have a lot of stuff to play with.

3. This has nothing to do with Nuclear Energy, your argument is flawed!
Don't even try to play the race card here. We will not stand for that kind of sexism.

6. Many people gloss over anything they read
Newspapers, books and on line reading. They are trying to get as much information as quickly as possible therefore don't read everything.

It makes for some pretty incoherent responses to threads sometimes.

10. You were the first to actually read my post about Limbaugh. Thanks!

I don't know what they pay you for being in the activist corps. But, it's not enough!
(I had to edit my 'Rush' post to say, "satire.")

9. You want people to read???

Oh, HELL no.

One of the hard lessons I have learned (and ignored for the most part) in my time at DU is that if you have something to say, give a sexy headline that gives a good summary. They'll read the headline. After that, all bets are off.

12. You have to understand that some are on their last nerve after 8 years of neo-con rule. When...
they see something posted that looks like a BS neo-con talking point in the first line, their stomach might turn to a ball of stress, emotions might take over and they may stop reading. Some of us get it from every angle, friends, loved-ones, radio (even on NPR at times) , tv, in the market etc. Some may be used to tuning out at the first sign of Limbaugh regurgitation. That's just an unfortunate part of American life today.
That being said, it is against the rules to accuse someone of being a repub, alert it if offends you.

14. One of the things that people who post the long thoughtful
missives is that this is a fast moving site and by and large, people don't read much past the OP subject line.

One can have a great post, but if you didn't intrigue enough people with the subject line it'll sink like a rock.

Conversely, if you have a OP subject line that alludes to sex, a bizarre title line, or so oblique that it's incomprehensible, you will probably get lots of responses.

I also think that a lot of people spend hours composing some tome they think will be the be all end all of posts and are amazed that it wasn't lauded with a thousand recommendations. It could be that it isn't that interesting (which is par for the course,) it was badly laid out (all one paragraph, say, and hard to read), or so disjointed and badly written it would take a cryptographer to decipher it.

Also, sometimes what you have to say isn't what I'm on about. So I skip over it. No offense, but it's like the newspaper. If you're not interested, you move on. Even if you do, you might not be motivated enough to rec or reply. I find myself liking some great reply to a post and it's just "enough said", and I don't want to make my ignorance manifest by replying to it.

Such is life in the DU.

It may be not a great system, but it is what it is.

16. You're right, of course. But the being skipped over, etc., is just part of life.
No big deal. But being accused of being a republican, or some such bullshit, is a little much, when reading a whole two sentences would have changed the reaction, 180 deg.

19. Not only. Another factor is that DU is a kind of soundbite forum generally . . .
Thoughtful posts are going to get a better hearing (seeing?) at DailyKos or another more serious site.

17. Also humor is just hard to convey in plain text . . .
There's no tone of voice to manipulate or body language, which are often vital to humor -- especially punchline humor.

It's why they usually recommend against humor in business email messages: the danger that the recipient won't get it and will be confused or offended.

And then, of course, some people are too serious by half and, yes, fail to read posts all the way through.

20. As I said to my mom once when she was fired from a commission.
You make all the right enemies for all the right reasons. I find it funny when people misunderstand PLAIN ENGLISH. So you write, they misunderstand... but the rest of us get it.B-)

BTW mom was one of two rehired in the entire city boards and commissions after they all got fired and was the longest serving board member in history when she died... still on the board. :patriot: :hi:
