Alaskan gas pipelind. Where does it go?
I've been googleing for about 20 minutes and can't find a map. Plenty of text but no map. Could any one here point me in the right direction?

3. Hi, Whoa. You're looking at the Trans-Alaska Pipeline.
I think the OP is talking about the proposed natural gas pipeline, which is still very much in the planning stages, and is known here as the Trans-Canada line. The route has yet to be determined -- all sorts of issues to work out with the Alaska Natives, the Canadians, etc. Many people here wanted the gas pipeline to follow the route of the oil pipeline, including Sarah when she was running for governor. The issue seemed to be whether or not it would be feasible to build a liquefying plant in Valdez so that the natural gas could be shipped to the Lower 48. Also there are issues to be worked out with the producers, Exxon, BP and Conoco-Phillips.

There are also issues involving whether or how much of any natural gas would be kept here in the state to cover our own shortages.

This thing is still very much in the planning stages.

8. Yup. I know it's still in the planning stage
but I though that there would be some maps of the proposed routes.

10. I think Make7 below
has a link to Trans-Canada's website that shows the proposed route. This is still years away, and some doubt if it will ever get off the ground. They've been trying to build a natural gas pipeline up here for 30 years. Everything has to fall into place just right.

9. Thanks, Blue
When I read the OP, my first mental picture was of the AK pipeline I saw near Circle years ago.

Saturday morning slow-brain... :hi:

4. Which line?
That is the oil pipeline that is already in place - seen it in Fairbanks.

Not sure if that is what they met or the proposed natural gas pipeline that has not been started yet. Not sure on that one

Christ, that is some project. The it all gets sold to Japan and China.

On closer look, that ends in Valdez. That's the Trans Alaska pipe.

5. Thanks.
Everybody up here knows that Canada wants the natural gas to release oil from their tar sands. That's why a lot of Alaskans want the pipeline to stay in the state. This is a big bone of contention up here.

14. Didn't they just grant a license to TransCanada to build the pipeline?
I thought the legislation was just passed recently for the license with a $500 million subsidy for TransCanada - but not including a guarantee that the pipeline will ever be built.

Seems to me that I recall other companies have most of the leases to develop the gas fields. Sounds like things are rather complicated, but as long as everyone is making lots of money, they'll probably work something out.

16. Yes, they did grant the license last month, I believe,

but the Oil Companies are proceeding apace with THEIR plan -- they are the ones with the leases, after all -- and have launched an expensive ad campaign trying to pull Alaskans back over to their side. Trans-Canada is only responsible for constructing the pipeline, not getting the gas into it. That's been a big issue because the argument has been what's the point of building a pipeline if the holders of the leases won't give up the gas -- especially since the bill includes a $500 million incentive from the state budget to Trans-Canada for proceeding. Besides all that, there are many, many people in the state who think that both proposals are bogus, and that Alaska should be moving instead to an all-Alaska pipeline to Valdez, building a liquefaction plant there, sending some gas to the Lower 48, and building spur lines to fuel Alaska, because we are running up against shortages all over the state. We have exorbitant energy costs, and a lot of people are pretty furious that our natural gas would go to Alberta for them to extract oil from their tar sands instead of going to the people of Alaska who really need it to heat their homes.

Everything up here is so much in flux right now politically -- especially with this nomination of Sarah for VP -- that I don't think anyone has a clue what will happen in the future. Remember we have Ted Stevens' trial starting on September 12, which should be a great distraction, and will probably result in the Republican party appointing someone (who knows who?) to run against Mark Begich if Ted is convicted. Don Young and Sean Parnell (the lieutenant governor who should be next in line for the governor's position if by some horrible quirk of fate McCain/Palin gets elected) are virtually tied for the Republican nomination for House -- with a recount guaranteed. So if Sean wins that and the general, and Sarah becomes VP, her attorney general, who nobody even knew before she appointed him, would become the governor. If Don wins and beats Berkowitz (which is likely unless Ethan can manage to drum up more support in the Bush), he'll probably be indicted soon for his connections with VECO, and then we'll have to have another special election.

We've got Mark Begich and Ethan Berkowitz, the Democratic nominees for Senate and House, publicly praising Sarah Palin for her ethics and independence (which grosses me out) because they're trying like crazy to snap up the Independents who have consistently supported her. There are still FBI investigations going on up here of the corrupt bastards. Sarah's got her Troopergate. It's just one thing after another.

Our political scene up here is always pretty entertaining, but this year is just crazy.

ed. If somebody else from Alaska understands all this stuff and can correct me where I'm wrong, please do so. This stuff really makes my head spin, and this is only my interpretation of what's going on here.

12. BP and Conoco's plan
is kind of an end-around Sarah Palin's AGIA (Alaska Gasline Inducement Act). She pretty much cut Big Oil out of her negotiations with Trans-Canada because the oil companies didn't meet all the requirements that the she and the legislature wanted, so BP and Conoco-Phillips came up with an alternate proposal, the Denali plan. It's all very complicated and I don't understand it well, but I do know that there are two competing natural gas pipeline projects, Trans-Canada and the Denali plan.
