Baton Rouge is still a massive mess from Gustav
Not sure if the MSM is paying attention, but folks here in Baton Rouge are still suffering big-time. Most people do not have power, and many will not get it for two or three weeks from now. Schools will be closed at least through next week. Worst of all, Ike is supposed to be heading this way. Let's really hope that Ike swerves, since, if not, the debris piles from Gustav will be blown all over hell.

1. I'm so sorry -
Since it's not politically expedient, we're not hearing much about it.

We're all watching Ike - and hoping it doesn't retain its strength. :pals:

2. O dear oh dear , Blitzen. .
For all the hoopla about "how well" Gustav was going to be handled compared to Katrina.. Are you getting any help from FEMA and the National Guard?. . Is there evidence that the whole "build-up" wasn't just a political photo-op?

5. Some help from FEMA....
they (with the National Guard) passing out water, ice, MREs. But their bureaucracy as far as distributing financial assistance is still a joke, designed to keep people from being able to qualify.

Most people's ire is aimed at Entergy, the power company. People are starting to realize that we have a third-world infractructure. Maybe there will finally be a push for underground power lines, but the right-wing radio hosts are pooh-poohing the idea, since, they say, it would increase our monthly bills! As if spending scores of millions to repair power poles every time there's a hurricane doesn't do that already1

8. The news media is too busy concentrating on the election...
at least the 24/7 channels.

It's cheap and I suppose it makes money but it's very irritating. Having a bunch of talking heads in a studio costs little or nothing, but I seriously believe the news media is irresponsible for not showing the important news stories of the day. They can send reporters down to the area the hurricane strikes and have them stand in the wind and rain and act like fools, but they don't cover the suffering and the aftermath.

I just wish one 24/7 news channel would devote one hour a day to the election and the other twenty three hours to covering news. I bet their ratings would be so high that the other channels would have to follow their example.

9. Just got power here myself.
Let me reiterate what the poster said here. It's bad here and even worse in the southern part of the state. If you can spare it, people need your help, big time.

11. The media only pays attention when a hurricane hits a major city
Gustav spared New Orleans, so it's forgotten in today's "15 second attention span" media.

If Camille hit in 2008, it would be forgotten within 24 hours by the media.
