20 Yrs Ago Today, DEA's Chief Admin Law Judge Issued this on Marijuana:
Twenty years ago today, the Drug Enforcement Administration's chief administrative law judge issued a landmark ruling on marijuana — but our government has ignored this historic decision since the day it was issued

"Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man By any measure of rational analysis marijuana can be safely used within a supervised routine of medical care The evidence in this record clearly shows that marijuana has been accepted as capable of relieving the distress of great numbers of very ill people, and doing so with safety under medical supervision It would be unreasonable, arbitrary and capricious for DEA to continue to stand between those sufferers and the benefits of this substance in light of the evidence in this record"
— DEA Administrative Law Judge Francis L Young, September 6, 1988

Detailed excerpts:
http://www.fcda.org/judge.young.htm

While DEA Administrative Law Judge Francis Young's monumental decision that cannabis (marijuana) should rightfully be placed in Schedule II or lower of the Controlled Substances Act to make it available by prescription has been held hostage by the DEA's discretion in doing so. Nonetheless, the factual findings of his decision remain permanently on the record, and serve as a testimonial to his honest pursuit of the medical issues surrounding cannabis.

2. K&R
My Neurosurgeon told me that marijuana is the best pain reliever known to man, bar none. It works on muscle, nerve and bone pain. Our bodies have natural canabinoid receptors, just like it has opiate receptors.

I tried every pill could think of to prescribe for me after my accident and subsequent surgeries... none of them even came close to easing the pain. Mostly all they did was knock me out so I could get some sleep. With marijuana, I can function well and be pretty much pain free. There's no quality of life being drugged up with the chemicals that Big Pharma wants you hooked on...

3. Never having used marijuana in any form ever, may I express my utter contempt,
loathing, and detesting of any person of any gender, race, color, creed, ethnicity, national origin, political party or persuasion who uses his or her influence or vote to, in any way, restrict the use of marijuana for medical purposes in the manner the Chief Administrative Law Judge spoke? :P

It's nice that these Judges get to issue these sorts of decisions, and they are right, but the government stopped obeying judges some time ago.

7. Coincidentally it's only been about two weeks since Obama
Chose the guy that came up with the term "Drug Czar" as his vice presidential pick.

Anyone who thinks the drug war is going to come to a close any time soon needs to quit bogarting that insane skunk weed they've been hitting on.

15. We appear to have a bipartisan consensus on drug policy.
Much like our bipartisan consensus on imperial war policy.

Obama has already been backtracking away from decriminalization and simply refers to his own drug use as "a mistake." His selection of drug warrior Biden does not bode well.

It is only the unmentionable minor parties and candidates who have good planks on these issues. How depressing.

16. Right offhand I can't think of a single more bipartisan issue than the drug war..
How depressing is completely right.

"Silenced" is a poster over on Salon.com and she has put her finger on the pulse of the drug war. Silenced calls it a "secular religion" in that the politicians all have to have faith in the face of zero evidence that it works and also in the face of a mountain of evidence that it doesn't work.

18. Why George HW Bush made it go away
Edited on Sun Sep-07-08 09:30 AM by formercia
He used the Office of Drug Policy as a means of attacking his political enemies and it afforded a convenient go-around to conventional investigations by allowing sneak and peek and made DEA resources at both State and Federal levels available to be used for political investigations. Bill Clinton pretty much dismantled the ODP after taking office and fired a bunch of political operatives that had been using the ODP as a cover for political operations.

Although my preferences run to Glenlivet, Bowmore and Talisker I hope one day there is a special section in liquor stores where you can buy pot. Pot prohibition is a massive gov't intrusion as well as a lost economic opportunity of truly golden proportion to tax the sale of quality pot.

My support for hippies? I thought I was being nice and agreeing with you on single malts.

on edit:
Why are you calling me an asshole. You don't even know me or how much I drink. I think as a new poster here you should be more respectful of other peoples opinions if you want to continue posting here. There are a lot of rude Republicans hanging and posting here. If you are one of those, I hope you are not, you will probably get banned.

Hi kylon. I'm MullenBank and I got under fumesucker's skin with my comment about hippy nature being generally bathing averse. I agree with you that single malts are wonderful especially when enjoyed in moderation and in good company.

29. The drug war is essential to building up our police state.
What else justifies the arbitrary search and seizure that drug cops are so fond of? Only terrorism. And let's face it terrorism is just not prevalent enough among US citizens to allow the sort of widespread police presence that the drug war enables.
