The last time we had a candidate for national office who avoided the press and spoke only in .....
.... very controlled environments, and then only with heavily scripted remarks, and only in front of jingoistically stupid slogan backdrops ......... we got George Bush.

What are Sarah Palin or her handlers afraid of?

That is why they are hiding her from the press.

15. Sock puppet? Don't you believe it.
She and Todd have an agenda. I'm sure that all of Joel's army will be voting their way.

3. Was it Warren Harding who never left home and campaigned from his porch?
But he spoke to the press every afternoon.

13. I think it was McKinley
but I'm not absolutely sure. It was a late 19th Century Republican of the Gilded Age for sure.

10. Truth be told
Bush didn't do that the first time out. He was pretty available to the media, if I remember. In fact, he made some pretty big gaffes, which the media papered over, and which led to his muzzling once in office. The second time around, he was sequestered a lot and spoke only in controlled circumstances -- but not the first.

It is u heard of for a newly-hatched political figure to avoid the spotlight. I was a journalist for my whole career and I never knew a politician, at least one who wasn't an incumbent, who wouldn't crawl over his/her grandmother's still-warm body to get in front of a camera or a microphone.
