the Palin book banning attempt is an issue
Edited on Mon Sep-08-08 08:22 PM by louis c

<snip>
In a Chicago Tribune article yesterday, Sarah Palin, then Mayor of Wasilla Alaska asked the town librarian 12 years ago, what her response would be to a request to have books removed. When the librarian, Mary Ellen Emmons, said she would not be all right with censoring any books should she be asked to do so. A few months later, Emmons received a letter from Palin telling her should would be fired. After a wave of public support on Emmons' behalf, Palin relented and let her keep her job. (Chicago Tribune)

My opinion below:
What kind of a person would even ask about banning books? Certainly not one who respects liberty. This, along with the abuse of power investigation against Sarah Palin, really shows you where her heart is. She should scare you to death, as she does me. No one even knows her. She has yet to even do an interview. She's been sheltered since her selection. Wouldn't you think that her "favorables" would be less than 20% with a high "no opinion", considering that we hardly know her. (louis c)

Everything that I've learned about Sarah Palin, so far, has caused me deep concern. I would vote against her just on the issues, but beyond that, she personally scares me.

1. I can't believe that people will hear that she tried to BAN BOOKS...
...and still support her. That is pure fascism. The Nazis had big book burning ceremonies. Is that what Mooselini has planned for us? How un-American can you get?

This woman should be in jail, not a campaign bus. She is a traitor!

2. Hell yes its an issue - original 1996 article from the Wasila newspaper
http://www.frontiersman.com/articles/2008/09/06/breaking_news/doc48c1c8a60d6d9379155484.txt">Palin: Library censorship inquiries 'Rhetorical'

In the wake of strong reactions from the city's library director to inquiries about censorship, Wasilla Mayor Sarah Palin on Monday was taking pains to explain her questions about censoring library material were “rhetorical.”

Library Director Mary Ellen Emmons last week said Palin broached the subject with her on two occasions in October - once Palin was elected mayor Oct. 1 but before she took office on Oct. 14, and again in more detail on Monday, Oct. 28. Besides heading the Wasilla City Library, Emmons is also president of the Alaska Library Association.

The issue became public last Wednesday, when Palin brought it up during an interview about the now-defunct Liquor task Force. Palin used the library topic as an example of discussions with her department heads about understanding and following administration agendas. Palin said she asked Emmons how she would respond to censorship.

...

Emmons drew a clear distinction Saturday between the nature of Palin's inquiries and an established book-challenge policy in place in Wasilla, and in most public libraries.

“I'm not trying to suppress anyone's views,” Emmons said. “But I told her (Palin) clearly, I will fight anyone who tries to dictate what books can go on the library shelves.”

...

But on Monday, Oct. 28, Emmons said Palin asked her outright if she could live with censorship of library books. This was during a weak when Palin was requesting resignations from all the city's department heads as a way of expressing loyalty.

8. if journalists were doing their job, this article would be all over the press
because it's a great insight into how she acts in a leadership role, which is horribly, I might add.

"...the now defunct Liquor task force."

Hmmmm...

Demanding shows of loyalty.

Hmmmmm...

Banning books

Hmmmmm...

4. Palin's list
Have you seen the list of books she wanted banned? It clearly reveals what an uneducated idiot she is!

5. There never were specific books mentioned.

The facts are on our side. we don't need to be led into the trap of exaggeration.

The mere inquiry is enough. The follow-up letter asking for the librarian's resignation clinches it. anything else is conjecture and plays into the other side's hand.

14. The fact she was looking into it was enough
Does anyone think she asked the librarian how to ban bookks so she could protect us from censorship?

7. Please edit your post.
So the link is above your commentary. It looks like the "scaring me to death" is part of the article, when it's not, which is misleading. Thanks.

11. The list of banned books circulating is false and should not be used as evidence against her.
We aren't Republicans so we shouldn't slander with false information.
The truth is plenty damning.
